Job Announcement

The Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) is seeking a Senior Maintenance Worker to be a part of one of the most highly regarded park systems in the country. With more than 25,000 acres of parkland, nine RECenters, eight golf courses, three lakefront parks, and more, FCPA is an exciting organization to be a part of and there are many opportunities for staff to make a difference at every level.

Participates in the work of an assigned park maintenance crew, performing skilled and unskilled tasks relating to grounds maintenance and facility repairs. May be required to supervise crews. Performs maintenance on park facilities e.g., athletic fields, sport courts, picnic areas, playgrounds, amphitheaters, trails, restrooms, parking lots, signs, fencing, etc. Duties include mowing, snow removal, and other grounds maintenance tasks. Removes litter and performs rough carpentry, light construction, minor repairs, and painting of facilities, as necessary. Operates a tractor/bucket loader with attachments, infield groomers, utility vehicles, mowers, and other equipment. Uses gas powered equipment such as trimmer, blower, and chainsaw. Inspects and drives a truck with and without a trailer combination to haul equipment and materials. Informs supervisor of conditions requiring special attention. Maintains tools and equipment in good working order. Completes daily work reports when supervising a crew. Performs related duties as required.

  • General maintenance and repair of machinery;
  • Provides guidance and training to Maintenance Workers;
  • Coordinates various activities associated with repair and maintenance projects (e.g., paving, repairing sanitary sewer lines, rodding, and pressure cleaning operations);
  • Transports crew and equipment to work site;
  • May lead a crew in absence of Maintenance Crew Chief;
  • Inspects, and reviews work of a crew engaged in a variety of basic maintenance, construction and grounds keeping activities;
  • May Lead grass cutting, sodding, seeding, and fertilizing activities;
  • Leads playground equipment maintenance;
  • Participates in the maintenance of building walks, gutters, catch basins, and retaining walls, as well as concrete and asphalt paving projects;
  • Completes daily and preventive maintenance reports;
  • Implements safety procedures;
  • Engages in safe working practices and complies with safety programs and guidelines;
  • Reports and monitors unsafe working conditions;
  • Complies with safety competencies.


Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of small engine equipment;
  • Working knowledge of concrete, asphalt, masonry and carpentry work.
  • Knowledge of single axle dump truck, trailer, utility bucket truck, snow plow, spreader, tank truck, water truck and pickup truck;
  • Working knowledge of and the ability to use methods, tools and equipment commonly used in maintenance, construction, and grounds keeping activities;
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety practices;
  • Basic knowledge of computers;
  • Ability to lead other employees in a variety of activities, maintain records, and prepare reports;
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions;
  • Ability to perform activities requiring manual dexterity;
  • Ability to perform basic data entry;
  • Ability to work outside with regular exposure to severe weather, noxious fumes, high levels of dust, etc.;
  • Ability to perform medium to heavy manual labor;
  • Ability to comprehend and comply to safety practices;
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships with customers, employees and supervisors.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade; and two years of experience in maintenance, construction, or a related field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Ability to operate a tractor with attachments, a loader, mowers, and other equipment to include small gas-powered equipment.
  • Able to perform heavy manual labor.
  • Experience in grounds maintenance, construction, or a related field.
  • Registered tech pesticide applicator certificate or the ability to obtain.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Driver's License (Required).

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs may be subject to a weekly testing requirement. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to stand or walk for extended periods of time. Ability to climb on and off equipment. Ability to lift 50 lbs. Ability to work in variable weather conditions while performing physical labor. Ability to traverse uneven ground. Ability to bend, twist, turn, stand, sit, and stoop. Ability to operate motor vehicle and trailer. Ability to operate grounds equipment. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
