AARP's Community, State and National Affairs (CSN) Group includes Government Relations, Programs, Volunteer Engagement, Community Outreach and Advocacy at the federal, state and local levels. It delivers on AARP's social mission by educating and engaging people 50-plus and their families, strengthening communities, and championing issues that help give people financial and health security.

The Director, Livable Communities leads a team responsible for AARP's advocacy at both the state and federal level in livable communities/financial security. Directs the development of the organization's legislative and regulatory agenda. Identifies and monitors emerging public policy trends across the country and collaborates across teams to contextualize those trends. Advocates for organizational interests in front of legislative bodies and governmental agencies, and influences government policy/legislative direction and public opinion to achieve strategic goals for the organization. Collaborates with senior management to provide political and legislative expertise on activities critical to the organization and to develop strategies to position the organization for success.

Responsibilities

  • Manages a team to meet or exceed organizational advocacy goals at the federal, state, and local government level.
  • Provides strategic counsel and advice to AARP state offices and other internal stakeholders to achieve the organization's advocacy goals.
  • Identifies and monitors legislative and regulatory issues affecting Americans 50 and older and assists senior leadership with strategic planning to develop successful advocacy plans.
  • Builds and maintains strong relationships with governmental representatives, coalitions, professional associations, and other stakeholders with the goal of advancing and achieving the organization's goals.
  • Represents the organization in media opportunities, social media videos, blog posts, and other collateral to advance an advocacy agenda.
  • Advocates for organizational interests in front of legislative bodies.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years management experience with 7+ years of relevant work experience ; d emonstrated ability to manage a team to work across departments to create significant change to improve the organization's efforts in the liveable communities space.
  • Bachelor's degree (advanced degree preferred) in public policy, social sciences, law, political science, history, project or program management, or other field directly related to the duties of this position
  • Strong communication skills (written, verbal, social) to leverage insights into communication messaging, collateral materials, and programmatic execution.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of state and local policies and politics around aging (health security, financial security, and livable communities).
  • Encourages and advises others on ways to improve efficiency and effectiveness; facilitates the implementation and acceptance of change in the workplace.
  • Experience with financial/budget analysis, project management, project leadership, and working in cross-functional teams.

Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA)

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as telecommuting workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work and telecommuting can only be done within the United States and its territories.
