Overview
In pursuit of service excellence, the Recreation Leader III works closely with the Recreation Manager to ensures the center's smooth operation by monitoring health & safety, patron satisfaction, risk management, and program & building coverage during assigned shifts.

Significant areas of responsibility include :
  • Management of the day-to-day operation of the center
  • Assist with the hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating of seasonal and part-time staff.
Recreation Leader III is an integral part of the center’s operations and the Recreation Services Division. This includes fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for patrons and participants. An engaged employee in this position plays an active role in the success and growth of the center, division, and department. The Recreation Leader III should be available to work various hours, including days, evenings, weekends, and some holidays. Enthusiasm, flexibility, and excellent communication skills are needed to be successful in this position—the Recreation Leader III work under close supervision of the recreation center director.

Each member of the team is accountable for the outstanding delivery of services to the community. The ideal candidate should possess good knowledge of the principles and practices of program management and community recreational work; knowledge of youth development principles and the developmental assets; ability to plan and direct program activities; ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers participants, and the public; ability to generate interest and participation in center activities with varied age groups; and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing. Your ability to work independently and to use judgment within established procedures is critical. Your experience preparing reports, ability to organize, work with a variety of staff at all levels, and handle assignments across sections of the recreation services division will ensure success in this role.

The Opportunity
  • Recruit, hire, coach, retain, and engage seasonal and part-time staff.
  • Provides overall supervision of the center's staff, participants, and patrons in the absence of management staff.
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergencies, using a crisis management plan and following up with a detailed accident/incident report.
  • Works with outside agencies to ensure proper performance and program operation of the center
  • Provides customer services to current and prospective participants and patrons by giving tours and at questions and concerns accurately.
  • Assisting center staff with duties related to cleaning, maintenance
  • Informs management of maintenance issues and projects as requested.

The mission of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities is to enrich the City of Alexandria by creating meaningful experiences through public space, cultural activities, and programming. The City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities received national accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). National accreditation requires park and recreation agencies to meet 155 standards representing effective and efficient park and recreation operations elements.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

High School Diploma and three (3) years of related experience or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. First Aid training.

Preferred Qualifications

Five years experience in community recreational work performing tasks in the required area at a level equivalent to Recreation Leader II; Five years experience leading recreational and cultural activities in arts and crafts, sports, games, music, drama, cooking, exercise and field trips, or any equivalent combination; Completion of college-level courses in physical education, recreation, fine arts, or other related fields; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
