Job Summary

Aptive is seeking a dedicated, forward looking Technical Writer to support digital transformation within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This individual will work with the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA), VA Central Office (VACO) or the Office of Information Technology (OIT) to support the administration's mission with activities such as: project, product and product line management; moving from waterfall management processes to Agile and Scaled Agile practices; and from stove-piped development, delivery and operations processes to DevSecOps best practices such as Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD). We are seeking individuals committed to delivering and improving quality services to Veterans.

Primary Responsibilities

A Technical Writer must have experience in explaining highly technical data and information in simplistic grade school language for end users of complex IT systems and projects. Must be able to use a variety of word processing, spreadsheet, graphics and scheduling tools. Must have experience in being able to gather and convert data into a written narrative. Must be proficient in some or all responsibilities:

  • Research and write a broad range of communications/outreach materials (e.g., articles, blogs, brochures, fact sheets, flyers, media pitches, mobile apps, outreach scripts, social media posts, videos, websites) under strict deadlines.
  • Develop content in compliance with AP style and other guidelines.
  • Review outreach material for stylistic and formatting consistency.
  • Review and/or copyedit content developed by other members of the team.


Minimum Qualifications

  • AA or 2 year technical school in Computer Science, Electronics Engineering or Other Engineering or Technical Discipline is required. (4 years of additional relevant experience may be substituted for education)
  • Excellent writing and editing skills to include familiarity with AP styles and ability to adapt to specific organizational style conventions rapidly.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a public trust clearance.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience supporting large Cabinet-level federal agencies, ideally the Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • Proven expertise in strategic communications, public relations, public affairs, research, writing and editing.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to get up to speed quickly on complex issues; desire to work in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving environment.
  • Capable self-starter with a drive to get all types of work done and high attention to detail.
  • Excellent ability to communicate across most mediums and settings.
  • Knowledge of military and Veteran populations.
