Job Summary

Aptive Resources is seeking a Communications Specialist to support integrated communications efforts for a national campaign promoting awareness and utilization of U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits among Veterans, their families, and care givers.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented and an exceptional writer, skilled at developing content for a variety of media, including websites, social media, and blogs. They are a proactive problem solver who works well both independently and as part of a team. The candidate must be committed to providing superior customer service and have a positive and flexible attitude. They are an integral part of the development and execution of communications and outreach plans that will raise awareness of the significant, positive role VA benefits can play in a Veteran's post-service journey and inspire eligible individuals to apply.

This full-time position is located at Aptive Headquarters in Old Town Alexandria, VA; Remote Work is also available.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Research, write, edit, and coordinate a broad range of advertising and outreach materials (e.g., newsletter articles, blog posts, social media calendars, email campaign messages, brochures, fact sheets, flyers, ad copy, and video scripts), often under tight deadlines
  • Develop materials that clearly and concisely present information about complex benefits and program in an easy-to-understand manner; reinforce approved communications plans; and adhere to other style and compliance guidance.
  • Gather, analyze, and interpret information and data from various sources.
  • Contribute to client-ready materials for stakeholders, including VA leadership.
  • Lead specific project tasks, such as social media events, with guidance from the Aptive project manager.
  • Interface with Aptive graphics team to create professional advertising and outreach materials.


Minimum Qualifications

  • 5 to 7 years of relevant experience in strategic communications and written content development.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related program, such as mass communications, marketing, public relations, or English.
  • Excellent organizational skills with a high-level attention to detail and ability to carry out multiple tasks under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to deliver clear, compelling communications, both written and verbal.
  • An active VA security clearance or ability to obtain and maintain a public trust clearance.
  • Availability to work full time in Alexandria, V.A. and/or a telework environment.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.


Desired Qualifications

  • Consulting experience supporting large, complex Cabinet-level federal agencies, ideally the Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • Knowledge of military and Veteran populations and VA benefits.
  • Experience communicating about Veterans' issues.
  • Experience planning and executing social media events.
  • Proficiency in organizing, scheduling, and leading meetings internally and with clients.
