Do you want to help make the world a better place with your advocacy skills?  We’re seeking a Senior Policy Advisor to lead OSF advocacy and policy development in Washington on U.S. policies related to Latin America. The Senior Policy Advisor will be OSUS’ expert on these issues and will advocate for open society principles in these areas.

As part of the Open Society Foundations’ network, Open Society-US (OSUS) is committed to building a vibrant, inclusive, and just society in the United States and in its foreign and national security policies. OSUS and its lobbying affiliate, the Open Society Policy Center, conduct and support advocacy on a wide range of domestic and foreign policy issues, including strong human rights policies, cooperative global engagement, better access to public health services, and greater corporate and governmental transparency and accountability.

As a Senior Policy Advisor at Open Society, you will:

  • Lead OSF advocacy in Washington on issues related to Latin America; develop strategies and materials to move US policy on related issues; including but not limited to position papers, letters, background memoranda, legislation, amendments, congressional letters, talking points, hearing questions, congressional record statements, and op-eds;
  • Partner with colleagues across the network to identify and create opportunities for advocacy & grant-making;
  • Convene meetings with partners, grantees & allies to identify strategic gaps and/or develop policy recommendations;
  • Maintain a network of relationships with high-level officials in the US government and other key players within the policy community;
  • Monitor US foreign policy relating to Latin America as well as other key OSUS foreign policy objectives as needed;
  • Solicit, vet and recommend consultancies and grants and evaluate grantee organizations; Interpret the US political environment and serve as a resource for other OSF programs and contribute to multi-program efforts in relevant areas;
  • Consider relevant foreign and domestic policy interplay and opportunities; and
  • Work with communications staff on media strategies and outreach on related issues.

What we are looking for:

  • Extensive knowledge of one or more Latin American countries, including related U.S. policy cooperation and assistance to advance good governance, human rights, migration, global health, climate justice, human security and protection, and economic development;
  • Substantial practical experience, including 7-10 years’ work relevant to policy advocacy, ideally with employment history in an Executive Branch agency or the U.S. Congress;
  • Excellent knowledge of the U.S. political process and foreign policy formulation infrastructure, specifically the roles of Congress, the State Department, Pentagon, USAID, and relevant agencies;
  • Excellent written, research, and oral communications skills;
  • Substantial background in developing and implementing advocacy strategies;
  • Fluency in a second language and experience working in a cross cultural setting a plus;
  • Advanced degree preferred; and
  • Willingness to travel, as needed.
