EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I

STREET MAINTENANCE PROGRAM

An Overview
Performs semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work in the street maintenance section of the city. Operates medium to heavy maintenance equipment such as dump trucks, skip loaders, front-end loaders, motor grader, street sweepers, rollers, and other equipment in support of street division, along with various general maintenance and repair of streets and equipment. The incumbent must be available during emergency events including but not limited to winter storms, hurricanes, coastal storms etc. Work is performed under general supervision of the Assistant Superintendent.

The Opportunity
  • Operate construction and maintenance equipment such as dump trucks, pothole equipment, crack seal equipment, front-end loaders, bobcats/skid steers, asphalt hot pots, CDL trucks, rollers, and various other types of equipment in support of pavement maintenance and construction operations.
  • Identify needs for assigned projects.
  • Pick up and deliver equipment from construction sites.
  • Participate in the grading and crowning of City streets, roads and alleys using motor grader; roll asphalt; maintain asphalt and concrete roadway surfaces.
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner. Provide information within area of assignment and resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Maintain and repair any type of equipment used in maintenance or repairs of streets.
  • Operate street sweeper; clean and maintain roadways; clean storm drains; and remove ice and snow from roadways during winter storms.
  • Other duties as assigned or requested.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

The ideal Candidate
To qualify for this position, all candidates must possess a High School Diploma or GED; one (1) year of experience in the operation of maintenance and/or construction equipment; good knowledge of Public Works operations and procedures; some vocational training as related to construction/maintenance field; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Ability to perform heavy manual labor in all types of weather; must have a valid Commercial Driver’s license.
