Job Announcement

The Domestic Relations Unit provides intake and mediation services for domestic relations cases. Domestic Relations cases include issues of paternity, custody, visitation, child and spousal support, family abuse and abuse involving minor children. Intake Officers (Probation Counselor II's) explain the court process, prepare petitions and make referrals to other services. Intake Officers may also function as Case Managers for our Mediation Program, preparing and closing mediation cases.

Based at the Domestic Relations Court Services Unit of Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, works with culturally diverse clientele requiring cultural sensitivity and often requiring a language interpreter. Domestic Relations cases are often complex and emotionally charged and the Intake Officer must have excellent communication skills and the willingness to work collaboratively with other intake officers, county agencies, and nonprofit organizations.

Intake Officers must be able to deal with a wide variety of people, some of whom are volatile and emotionally distraught. Intake Officers must be able to multitask, prioritize and work within limited time constraints, and possess demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.

Salary: The selected applicant's starting hourly rate will be in the minimum to midpoint range ($28.6949 - $38.2596) of the advertised compensation range. Promotional rules apply for current Fairfax County Government and Fairfax County Public Schools employees.

Illustrative Duties

Intake Officer:
  • Provides intake services, determines probable cause, issues related to jurisdiction, venue and appropriateness of filing petitions and/or issuance of detention or shelter care orders;
  • Reviews complaints filed by law enforcement and citizens, conducts assessments to determine appropriateness for diversion;
  • Case manages diversion clients;
  • Decisions are made in compliance with the Code of Virginia, and Department of Juvenile Justice and/or Court Services Unit policies and procedures.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in social/behavioral sciences, criminal justice, or education plus two years of professional experience in probation work, social work, criminal justice, juvenile justice, education, or counseling. A master's degree in the disciplines above may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
None required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree or a combination of a Bachelor's degree and two or more years of experience working with the public in a public services or nonprofit agency, a court agency or within the legal community, and demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated experience providing court intake services (petitions for custody, visitation, and child support).
  • Must have experience with Microsoft Office, specifically Outlook and Word.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs may be subject to a weekly testing requirement.   • The appointee to the position will be required to complete a criminal background check and Child Protective Services Registry check to the satisfaction of the employer.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work is generally sedentary in nature. Visual acuity is required to read data on computer monitor and incumbent must be able to operate keyboard driven equipment. Must be able to communicate well, both in person and over the telephone. Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds. Ability to do a moderate level of walking. Must be able to travel to other work sites to attend meetings/training. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
