In this effort, we are seeking to contract highly qualified Spanish, Amharic, Arabic, and Dari language freelance translators to support our Department of School & Community Relations after-hours (after 4:00 p.m., holidays, and weekends) and/or on an emergency basis.

The ideal candidate is able to accurately translate messages and text in electronic and hardcopy formats that not only contain facts but also some abstract language and demonstrates an ability to capture intended messages.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree

Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience in translation

Essential Functions
  • Available to respond within 15 minutes of request and complete written translations up to 200 words in 30 minutes or less and translations between 200 and 500 words in not more than one hour
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing in English and the target languages (Spanish, Amharic, Arabic, or Dari)
  • Ability to transfer style, tone, and cultural elements accurately from one language to another
  • Well-developed skills in spelling, punctuation, syntax, grammar, and pronunciation of English and Spanish, Amharic, Arabic, or Dari
  • Familiarity with school terminology (preferred)
  • Experience interpreting and recording voice messages (preferred)
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality

Please note: Hourly compensation needs to adhere to the expected translation rate of 200 words per 30 minutes, as noted in job requirements. Hence, documents of less than 200 words shall not exceed $50 compensation; Documents of 201-300 words shall not exceed $75 compensation; Documents of 301-500 words shall not exceed $125 compensation; Documents beyond 500 words shall not exceed $150 compensation

Clearances
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test.

Public Health Compliance
  • Proof of COVID vaccination. Exemptions for religious/medical will be reviewed.
  • Must follow safety and health protocols.
