Assistant Coach, Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross CountryThe George Mason University, Intercollegiate Athletic Department, a NCAA Division I institution and member of the Atlantic 10 Conference, is seeking qualified applicants for the Assistant Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Coach (full-time, 12-month administrative professional faculty).George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason's academic and culturally inclusive environment.About the Position:The Assistant Coach reports to the Director Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country and is responsible for assisting in carrying out all activities necessary to accomplish the objectives of this sport within the guidelines of the NCAA, Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10), and the University.Responsibilities:Assist the Director in the following:Recruit and retain highly skilled student-athletes for the team;Provide instruction, specifically, on the sprinting, hurdling, relay and/or jumping events;Develop training and competition strategies for the above event group;Monitor student-athlete's academic progress;Maintain field and practice areas;Market and promote the program;Utilize various and appropriate technologies to analyze and apply findings; andAdhere to the NCAA, A-10 and University governing policies and procedures.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Effectively teach sprinting, relay, hurdling and/or jumping strategies during preparation and practice sessions;Motivate individuals and the team successfully;Travel and recruit student athletes;Scout opponents;Learn and comply with all policies and regulations of the University, and NCAA;Communicate effectively and appropriately;Maintain confidentiality of records and information;Interact in an effective and appropriate manner with diverse populations, the University community and the public; andHandle multiple tasks simultaneously.Required Qualifications:Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience;Demonstrated ability to coach within a highly competitive track and field and cross country program;A proven record of integrity, high principles and demonstrated skill in developing and motivating student athletes academically and athletically;Must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator's license that meets all of GMU's requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason's Vehicle Use Policy 1411 https://universitypolicy.gmu.edu/policies/vehicle-use/ The Office of Risk Management reserves the right to review the driver's licenses and Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) of all candidates selected with employment contingent upon a favorable review; andPhysical Requirements: Light Work - exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.Preferred Qualifications:Demonstrated skill in coaching a nationally competitive track program as an assistant at the NCAA Division I college- and/or university-level;Demonstrated knowledge of fundamental mechanics and techniques of track and field and cross country competition, pertaining specifically either to the sprinting, relay, hurdling and/or jumping events;Significant experience with coaching and developing nationally and internationally competitive athletes;Current strength and conditioning certification (NCSA-CSCS or USAW), andThree or more years coaching experience is desired.
