Job Description

The Washington Post is creating a standards team to ensure everything we do meets our rigorous criteria for fairness and accuracy. We are hiring a total of two editors to staff the team.

One editor will focus on policies and codes of conduct. This person will help revise, create and execute easy-to-understand guidelines that offer clear direction to the staff. We will emphasize protecting our journalists in every way at a time when newsgathering can be confrontational and even risky.

This editor will also work closely with the newsroom's leadership on rewriting and updating policies and take a lead role investigating when policies may have been violated. Discretion, interpersonal skills and a cool head amid crisis are essential for success in this role. Everyday this editor will be an advisor to the staff on understanding and interpreting all of our policies.

The standards editors are expected to collaborate with senior editors and each other, and to communicate with readers about Post values.

We are searching for highly experienced editors with excellent news judgment; meticulous fact-checking, research and line-editing abilities; and a deep understanding of Post ethics and standards.

These positions are based in our Washington newsroom.

Interested candidates should upload a cover letter and résumé to our jobs portal. All application materials can be uploaded to the same field. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by 08/14/2022 will be prioritized. The cover letter should be addressed to Deputy Managing Editor Liz Seymour and Managing Editor Krissah Thompson and should indicate which position is being sought.

The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.
