Overview
The Urban Planner II for Public Art performs diversified duties related to the management and implementation of public art throughout the city in accordance with the Public Art Implementation Plan and Policy. Candidates should have strong experience in planning and managing a variety of complex, community-based projects. The candidate will also provide full supervision to subordinate staff, including the preparation of performance evaluations for subordinates. Duties are performed under the general supervision of the Deputy Director - Office of the Arts.

What should you bring
Successful candidates will have a strong interest in implementing permanent and temporary public art projects throughout the city with a strong ability to managing a variety of projects at various stages of development. Candidates will have strong written and verbal communication skills that will be needed to write calls to artists, memos and contracts, and social media. Candidates will have an interest in working with a variety of artists from throughout the country in implementing public art projects in the city and have experience working with and engaging community groups. A passion for community engagement and public service will be highly valued in this role.

Among the highlights of the position, the Urban Planner II for Public Art will:

• Coordinate the development of the Public Art Annual Workplan;
• Develop and issues national and regional calls for artists;
• Direct the artist selection process;
• Lead neighborhood and community meetings related to public art projects;
• Develop, maintain, and evaluate the Public Art Program marketing tools and resources;
• Create and implement an annual public art maintenance/conservation plan;
• Participate in regional public art meetings; and
• Support the public art in private development process.

About the Department
The mission of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities is to support the well-being of Alexandria’s residents by ensuring access to a variety of quality recreation, park and cultural experiences. The City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities received national accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). National accreditation requires park and recreation agencies to meet 155 standards representing elements of effective and efficient park and recreation operations.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

Four-Year College Degree from an accredited college or university in regional, or urban Planning, or a closely related field such as Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Geography, Urban Studies, Public Administration, Physical Sciences, Historic Preservation, or Environmental Studies; three years of experience or Master's degree with 1 year experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

Four-Year College Degree plus four years experience or Graduate degree plus 2 years experience.
