The Linux Administrator is a member of the Linux Administration team within the Division of Information Technology (DIT) at the University of Maryland, College Park. This position is responsible for all aspects of IT system administration enabling the research, teaching, and academic units of the University to excel in their work. Working collaboratively with other Linux Administration staff, Platform Engineering, and other operational units, this role functions as a proactive administrator who can also solve complex day-to-day IT problems. This person will need a strong background in DevOps principles, automation, system architecture, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux in physical and virtual environments. They should understand architecture fundamentals and utilize automation technology like Puppet, Ansible, Satellite, Gitlab, and AWS Cloud Formation. Utilizing these tools, this person will deploy OS patches, provision new machines, manage configuration states, deploy new AWS solutions, and troubleshoot existing on-prem and cloud deployments, ensuring maximum uptime and service stability.

Minimum qualifications

EDUCATION

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education, technical certifications or training, or work experience

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant Linux experience, including administration, installation, configuration, optimization, best practices, server hardening, CLI, backup and recovery

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of client/server computing techniques, distributed systems management concepts, and computer communications
  • Administration of Linux in both virtualized (VMware and AWS) and physical environments
  • In-depth knowledge of DevOps and CI/CD automation and knowledge of at least one enterprise management and deployment tool (I.E., Puppet, Ansible, Satellite, Hiera, AWS Cloud Formation, Chef, etc.)
  • Must be able to participate in a 7/24/365 on-call rotation with the team
  • Must be able to work evenings and/or weekends and/or during change windows outside of normal business hours, responding effectively to emergencies
  • Ability to gather project requirements, develop detailed project plans, schedule and execute the project tasks
  • Excellent problem solving, attention to detail, multitasking, communication, and complex troubleshooting skills are required to work in this challenging and dynamic environment
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills. Must assist, guide, and share information with technical and non-technical personnel
  • Must be able to work well with others in a cooperative work environment

Preferences
EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 and greater with Red Hat RHCSA/RHCE or equivalent industry-standard certifications

EXPERIENCE

  • AWS Management experience (I.E., Instance deployment, Cloud formation development, Stack updates/change-sets, AMI creation, etc.) with AWS Certified Solutions Archite
  • Experience with programming in at least 1 high-level language such as Perl, Nodejs, Ruby, or Python
  • Experience managing out-of-band HW service processors like iDRAC
  • Experience creating Splunk search queries and utilizing Splunk in the troubleshooting process

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES

  • Administration of application middleware servers (I.E., JBOSS, Tomcat, Apache).
  • Ability to install, modify, integrate, and configure commercial and open-source software applications and utilities
  • In-depth knowledge of TCP/IP, BIND, LDAP, and other core technologies such as NTP, TCP/IP, iSCSI, SAN, NAS, networked file systems, etc.

Additional information: This position does not provide sponsorship for Visas.
Salary range:  $90,000 – $106,000.

Physical demands: Predominantly operates in an office environment. Some periods of time may be spent in computer rooms for installation, testing, and troubleshooting. Some work (less than 5%) requires moving and lifting of server equipment.
