AARP's Integrated Communications and Marketing (ICM) Group includes Membership, Content and Editorial, Customer Experience, External Relations, Brand Strategy and Strategic Communications. Across paid, earned, shared and owned channels, ICM manages AARP's reputation, drives engagement and member growth, and showcases AARP's mission and value through one, integrated voice.

The Senior Vice President, External Relations is responsible for developing an enterprise-wide public relations strategy that utilizes all channels to enhance the public perception and awareness of AARP's social mission and advocacy work. The SVP provides leadership, strategic direction, and management of enterprise-wide outreach to print, broadcast and digital media. In addition, the SVP is responsible for actively monitoring and quickly responding to reputational risks that may arise from multiple sources. This role also acts as chief spokesperson and lead media strategist for the organization.


  • Acts as chief spokesperson and media strategist for the organization. Sets overall message direction for issues and situations with significant public/national impact.
  • Positions the organization across all media channels and platforms, in order to reach members, opinion leaders, the general public and other targeted audiences.
  • Manages rapid response strategy for reputational threats and high-impact media coverage.
  • Drives cross-enterprise integration of the organization's messages and activities to create one organization brand voice; collaborates with state leadership to create processes for sharing information and coordinating national & state media outreach; provides media training and spokesperson testing for key national staff, state staff and volunteers.
  • Advises and counsels Officers, Board Members and senior staff on issues of importance to the organization's brand and reputation.
  • Builds communications plans that support organizational priorities including: issue areas, theme months and campaigns.
  • Collaborates with the senior leadership and communications staff of the organization's affiliates in supporting their communications needs as well as their integration into the overall enterprise communications strategy.
  • Responsible for daily management of the External Relations team including: recruiting, retention, professional development, assignment and staff utilization; manages an operating budget and procurement process for necessary vendors and consultants; responsible for daily management of organization's multiple public relations agencies.


  • Completion of a Bachelor's degree.
  • 12+ years of experience related to the duties of the position.
  • 7+ years of experience leading and managing a team.
  • Prior federal legislative policy-making experience desirable.
  • Prior experience serving as a senior spokesperson or lead media manager within an organization.
  • In-office environment with the ability to work effectively surrounded by moderate noise.

Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA)

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as telecommuting workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work and telecommuting can only be done within the United States and its territories.
