Analyst, Underwriting and Portfolio Management - Principal Associate

The Underwriting and Portfolio Management organization is responsible for working with internal partners to underwrite new transactions and manage the existing portfolio of loans. Our Underwriters andPortfolio Managers balance supporting the Commercial's Bank's growth and ensuring we have a scalable, well-managed business. This role supports the Financial Institutions Group (FIG).

FIG is an industry specialized group that supports asset managers and originators of commercial and consumer loans. The group has over $14 billion in commitments collateralized by middle market leveraged loans, factored receivables, ABL, SBA loans, commercial equipment leases, subprime auto loans, consumer installment loans, timeshares, residential mortgages, tax liens, security alarm contracts, and capital call commitments.

Capital One's Financial Institutions Group has a need for an Analyst level Underwriter to join its Commercial Lender Finance. The incumbent will provide underwriting and credit management support to cross-functional deal teams in underwriting commercial lender finance transactions, primarily related to Subcription Lines of Credit. This includes, but is not limited to, transaction due diligence, collateral analysis, structuring, legal documentation review, approval, and closing. The individual will primarily underwrite new transactions, assist in recasting and upsizing of existing transactions, and consult with team members to manage and monitor portfolio accounts.

As an Analyst, you begin to demonstrate subject matter proficiency in credit risk management and are expected to perform responsibilities with support and guidance from senior deal team members.

Primary underwriting responsibilities may include :
  • Participate in due diligence process and calls; evaluate industry research to draw relevant conclusions on material strengths, risks, and mitigants
  • Under the guidance of more senior deal team members, prepare all materials related to the assessment and approval of a new transaction:
  • Underwriting analysis
    • Collateral analysis
    • Balance sheet, Income Statement, and Cash Flow analysis
    • Coordinate with deal team on appropriate structuring options
    • Identification and mitigation of transaction risks
    • Determine the proper risk rating for all facilities in accordance with policy guidelines
    • Write and prepare all parts of the credit approval document
  • Research industries and market conditions in connection with financial/credit analysis
  • Oversee closing process requirements;
  • Engage with counsel to help prepare term sheets, commitment letters and fee letters; begin to understand a majority of provisions of credit documents and rationale; begin to comment on credit documents
  • Assisting in overall deal process and participate in communication with internal and external constituents
  • Prepare and/or review pricing models independently; understand drivers for pricing model outputs and consider how to balance the risk characteristics of a deal with returns
  • Assist in KYC/AML review and approval processes
  • Understand and employ all policies and procedures of the Bank. Remain up-to-date on all bank compliance regulatory policies and procedures and on all pending and proposed regulatory changes affecting bank compliance


Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree or Military Experience
  • At least 2 years of experience in credit underwriting or at least 2 years of experience in portfolio management
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Completion of formal commercial credit training program
  • 3+ years of experience in credit underwriting or at least 3 years of experience in portfolio management
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate in a concise and clear manner with clients and internally, both orally and in writing
