Duties

  • Monitors medication therapy for pain management in chronic pain, including initial assessment of new patients (initiates patient agreements, chart review, takes history, orders and evaluates lab tests, medication reconciliation) and follow-up of patients in clinics.
  • Makes recommendations to other team members to optimize drug therapy, prevent and manage adverse drug events, and reduce medication errors.
  • Provides drug information to physicians, nurses, trainees, and other health care professionals.
  • Provides patients and family members with information about their medication regimen, and counsels them on appropriate use and expected adverse effects.
  • Presents lectures and conferences to medical, nursing, and pharmacy staff and students concerning pain medication therapy.
  • Participates in pharmacy research and supports medical center human research involving drugs.
  • Acts as a liaison between the Pain Management program, primary care providers, and the outpatient pharmacy.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities related to assessing the effectiveness of pain management services.
  • Conducts pharmacoeconomic analysis of unrelieved pain (prolonged length of stay, unanticipated outpatient visits).
  • Evaluates physician orders as to appropriateness based on the patient's medication profile, inputs information into the computer system, and dispenses medications and supplies.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. NOTE: This applies to the past, current, and upcoming VA Health Professional Trainees (HPT) only. HPT is an individual appointed to temporary positions in one or more VHA medical facilities performing clinical or research training experiences to satisfy program or degree requirements or receiving VA Health Professional Scholarship Program. HPTs can be either VA-paid or Without Compensation (WOC).

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education: Must be a graduate of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited College or School of Pharmacy with a baccalaureate degree in pharmacy (BS Pharmacy) and/or a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree. NOTE: Prior to 2005 ACPE accredited both baccalaureate and Doctor of Pharmacy terminal degree program. Today the sole degree is Doctor of Pharmacy.
  • Licensure: Full, current and unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia.

Grade Determinations:

GS-13 Experience : One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.

In addition, candidates must demonstrate all of the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing to persuade and influence clinical and management decisions.
  • Expert understanding of regulatory and quality standards for their program area.
  • Ability to solve problems, coordinate and organize responsibilities to maximize outcomes in their program area or area of clinical expertise.
  • Expert knowledge of a specialized area of clinical pharmacy practice or specialty area of pharmacy.
  • Advanced skill in monitoring and assessing the outcome of drug therapies, including physical assessment and interpretation of laboratory and other diagnostic parameters.

  • Preferred Experience: PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency and PGY2 Pain and Palliative Care or equivalent practice experience

    Physical Requirements: Physical demands of the position require regular and recurring physical exertion, involving standing for prolonged periods of time, lifting/carrying of pharmaceutical supplies weighing up to 40 pounds, pushing and pulling of large carts. The job may include significant time at a computer terminal. Must be physically and mentally able to perform efficiently the duties of the position.

    Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
