The Washington Post is seeking an editor to oversee coverage of the Middle East,whoseenergy wealth, military power,religious rivalries, demographic challenges and political upheaval exert an outsized influence on world affairs.



We're looking foran experienced, agile leaderwith a demonstrated abilityto drive ambitious, revelatory coverage in ways that best serve our readers. Even as the world focuses on Russia's war with Ukraine, soaring energy prices will bring renewed attention to the Middle East, where oil-rich monarchies of the Persian Gulf appear on course to regain lost clout.We expect to put a top priority on coverage areas that illuminate the intersection between the United States and the region, including the enduring tensions with Iran and the West and the deep toll from years of conflicts in Iraq, Syria, Libya and Yemen.



This is an assignment editor role, part of a Foreign desk team that includes five other editors responsible for different geographic parts of the world.The position is responsible for a region that stretches from Morocco to Iran, overseeing half a dozen correspondents based in Cairo, Istanbul, Beirut, Baghdad and Jerusalem, as well as a roving conflict-zone correspondent based in Europe.



The job requires the judgment and vision to help reporters identify the most promising lines of coverage, conceive practical reporting strategies and deliver high-impact work that brings to light new information worthy of global attention. We expect our Middle East correspondentsto balance speed and depth, moving quickly to file on major news developments while also pursuingdeeperreporting targetsthat hold powerful individuals and institutions to account.



Any candidate should have at least five years of experience as an editor overseeing a challenging line ofnews and enterprisecoverage.Candidates should also be comfortable working in a multitude of storytelling formats and overseeing correspondents working in conflict zones. We are seeking candidates who can point to a record of success in conceiving and delivering fast, high-impact coverage that outshines competitors. The most highly qualified candidates will be experienced in leading international coverage and will bring strong subject-matter knowledgeofthe Middle East, including experience as a correspondent or editor based in the region. Proficiency in Arabic would be beneficial but is not required.



We expect thispositionto be based in our Washington newsroom. Candidatesshould submit a cover letter, résumé and three work samples to our jobs portal.
