Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking an assistant editor to work with Michelle Singletary, our award-winning personal financial columnist, helping to lead a multiplatform expansion of this core area of Post coverage.

We are looking for an insightful and energetic person who can bring clarity to complicated topics and offer creative ideas for making critical financial information accessible to a wide array of readers - particularly young people and people of color. The ideal candidate will have strong writing, editing and project management skills, as well as an entrepreneurial spirit. We are especially interested in hearing from people who have experience generating new products and finding large audiences for them: A key goal for this position will be finding fresh ways to showcase columns produced during Michelle's remarkable 25-year career writing "The Color of Money," and building on what is already a broad, deep and devoted community of readers.

The person in this role will have the following responsibilities:

  • Optimize and produce Michelle's columns by shaping and optimizing SEO strategy, headlines, metadata and URLs to maximize search traffic and social engagement.
  • Create recirculation modules and collections of durable personal finance topics using columns from Michelle's archive.
  • Produce live Q&As to build audience loyalty and habits. Read and categorize audience questions in advance to identify themes and maximize engagement.
  • Monitor The Post's toll-free ASK-POST phone line where readers leave questions for Michelle, with the aim of spotting trends, patterns and snippets that could inform future columns, form the basis of online chats, and populate audio/video posts on our site and/or social media platforms.
  • Support the development of new products, such as short-term newsletter courses or informational social campaigns, that can introduce new readers to The Post.

Please consider applying if you meet most of these requirements: a minimum of three years' experience in journalism, a history of growing audiences through search, a demonstrated ability to work with reporters and editors, and experience using analytics to make real-time and strategic decisions. Experience with audience strategy is a plus, as this role will use data to inform decision-making. Applicants also must be passionate about personal finance and love to read advice.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom and will not be eligible for remote work.

The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by 08/15/2022 will be prioritized. Candidates should upload a résumé and cover letter to our jobs portal. Your cover letter should be addressed to Business Editor Lori Montgomery, Sunday Business Editor Suzanne Goldenberg and Head of Audience Strategy and Growth Erika Allen.
