Duties

The Supervisory Physician will serve as a Deputy Director of the Office of Clinical Research (OCR) within the NIMH. As the Deputy Director of the OCR, the responsibilities of this position will include but are not limited to:
  • This Deputy Director position supports the Office of Clinical Research in its oversight function at NIMH with a clinical perspective, and reports directly to the Director of the Office of Clinical Research.
  • This position provides a unique opportunity to contribute to the NIMH extramural program through the oversight of all clinical research funded by the agency. Individuals in this position will become closely familiar with studies overseen by the NIMH constituted Data, Safety Monitoring Boards and also provide leadership support to the Clinical Trials Operations Branch and the Human Research Protection Branch.
  • Responsible for reviewing mental health clinical research studies funded or to be funded by the NIMH and evaluating clinical risk, strategies to mitigate risks, and the appropriateness of data and safety monitoring plans in the research proposals.
  • Must be able to review Data Safety Monitoring Board reports and evaluate data presented from a clinical perspective (with a particular focus on participant safety), as well as from a clinical research perspective (considering research operations and data integrity).
  • Review reportable events in clinical research studies (e.g., adverse events, serious adverse events, unanticipated problems) and provide clinical assessment of safety procedures followed by the research team, as well as any proposed corrective actions to help ensure participant safety and data integrity .
  • Ability to participate in relevant site monitoring visits and review site monitoring reports.

  • Title 38 pay is included in the salary of this position and is based on the physician's experience and field of expertise.
  • This position is designated as a "non-emergency/teleworker" position and the selected candidate will be considered a "non-emergency/teleworker" employee. In the event of a closure, you must be available to telework or request leave.
  • A newly appointed or reappointed employee may receive credit for prior work experience or active duty uniformed service that otherwise would not be creditable for the purpose of determining his or her annual leave accrual rate. All creditable service must be directly related to the duties of the position being filled and decisions to allow for such credit must be finalized prior to the selectee's entrance on duty. The use of this service credit incentive is at the discretion of the selecting official and service credit is granted only for a position deemed hard-to-fill.
  • A newly appointed or reappointed individual may receive a recruitment incentive. Recipients will be determined on a case-by-case basis based on organizational need, specific case justification, and budget limitations.
