Duties

  • You will design and direct the construction of and/or personally fabricate various mechanical test devices for instructional purposes.
  • You will consult with and advise Midshipmen, Scholars and Faculty on metalworking and machining technologies, processes, materials and fabrication techniques.
  • You will perform technical reviews of proposed designs and provide feedback using participant in model testing and make sound suggestions to modify designs and make modifications.
  • You will operate standard machining tools (e.g., lathes, threading machines, drill presses, auxiliary machines) to make work pieces.
  • You will use computer aided software , design, and drafting systems (e.g., AutoCAD, SpecsIntact, MS Excel, RS Means) to prepare engineering drawings, specifications and estimates.

Qualifications

GS-8 Specialized Experience:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-7 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Planning, designing or constructing models, devices, vehicles and structures, using materials and modern processing methods; 2) Recommending design modifications using creative techniques; 3) Working from CAD models, drawings, sketches, and/or oral information, plans, designs, and modifications; and 4) Assisting to construct a variety of models and devices with curves and irregular shapes (e.g., ship hulls, engine components, hydrofoils, airfoils, supersonic wind tunnel models, flight ready satellite hardware).

GS-7 Specialized Experience:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-6 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Assisting authorized personnel and/or faculty on metalworking and machining technologies, processes, materials, and fabrication techniques; 2) Helping others with conventional and computer numerical controlled (CNC) vertical milling machines and lathes, EDM machines, CNC water jet cutting machine, and/or other advanced machines; and 3) Interpreting guidance on proper techniques for developing models in Computer Aided Design (CAD) software.

Education

The following education may be substituted for specialized experience at the GS-7 level:

One full year of graduate education

OR

A combination of experience and graduate education as described above that equates to one year of experience. Your percentage of the required education plus the percentage of the required experience must equal one hundred percent.

Duties are performed while standing most of the time. Some lifting of objects weighing up to 50 pounds will be required. Incumbent must be capable of safely working with chemicals and when necessary conduct operations requiring use of an issued respirator and hearing protection.

A 40 hour work week is typical for this position.

This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
