Lead Underwriter & Portfolio Manager, Director - Regional Commercial Bank

Summary:

The incumbent is responsible for evaluating commercial loan applications for new loan facilities, as well as for processing loan renewals and extensions, all in accordance with business unit standards. Additional scope of responsibilities includes performing due diligence and gathering information as necessary to make sound lending decisions. This role may be responsible for training and overseeing the work product of less experienced Underwriters. The incumbent will also perform other duties as necessary to support the goals and objectives of the Commercial Lending area and the line of business unit.

Responsibilities:
  • Structure and underwrite complex credit facilities in a manner which achieves the Bank's profitability goals while staying within the Bank's risk parameters including bi-lateral and syndicated loan transactions.
  • Underwrite a wide range of transactions including Leveraged and/or Enterprise Value Reliant transactions, Owner-Occupied Real Estate and Asset Backed opportunities.
  • Review and analyze financial statements, tax returns and cash flow statements of Borrowers and Guarantors.
  • Understand and employ all policies and procedures of the Bank and the Line of Business.
  • Prepare written credit approval memoranda and ancillary forms for complex credit facilities.
  • Partner with Loan Administration and outside counsel in the preparation, review and approval of loan documentation to ensure the documents meet agreed upon business terms and satisfy the specific requirements of the appropriate credit approval authority.
  • Determine the proper risk rating for all facilities within an assigned loan portfolio and complete the required paperwork for any rating changes.
  • Partner with Relationship Managers to cultivate excellent client relationships. Exhibit a sense of urgency towards meeting client requests while also meeting acceptable risk parameters.
  • Understand and promote bank products to assist the Relationship Managers in meeting profitability targets.
  • Foster an open dialogue and strong working relationship with Risk Management, Loan Administration, Special Assets Department and other groups that support and review the line of business.
  • Remain up-to-date on all bank compliance regulatory policies and procedures and on all pending and proposed regulatory changes affecting bank compliance.


Additional Responsibilities: Middle Market Lending

Responsible for the Underwriting and Portfolio Management process which includes:
  • Completion of Annual/Periodic Review, interim financial analysis and associated due diligence.
  • Obtaining all financial information necessary to properly monitor and assess the risk of the credit.
  • Reviewing and reassessing Dual Risk Ratings.
  • Preparing and assessing Borrowing Base tracking reports.
  • Calculating and testing covenant compliance.
  • Preparing the appropriate forms for the Watch and Criticized credit meetings.
  • Resolving document/covenant issues, including documentation exceptions.
  • Contacting Borrower for overdue financial reporting/document requirements.
  • Ordering and reviewing Field Examinations, Appraisals and Environmentals.
  • Timely problem recognition and effectively communicating credit issues with Risk Management and Relationship Management.
  • Identifying potential structural enhancements in order to improve the credit and reduce risk.
  • Attending Bank meetings on Syndicated Credits.


Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree with a concentration in business, accounting or finance
  • At least 7 years in commercial banking underwriting or related financial industry, or at least 2 years of experience as a Commercial Underwriter III
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Overall computer familiarity and ability to successfully operate current industry standards


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree with a concentration in business, accounting or finance
  • 7+ years in commercial banking underwriting or related financial industry, or 2+ years of experience as a Commercial Underwriter III
  • Ability to write in a concise and clear manner to convey complex information
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively
