About the Department:The Schar School of Policy and Government's faculty-led undergraduate learning communities (LCs) are a key part of the School's undergraduate retention efforts. These communities emphasize academics (research, policy, constructive discourse, course credit) as well as connections with peers, professors, and a wide range of professionals. The LCs are built on the understanding that high-impact experiences increase connection among students and enhance a sense of belonging, and are correlated with academic persistence. LC activities include regular coffeehouse-style discussions, presentations by experts, field trips, and rigorous coursework. LC programming aims to carry Schar School undergraduates through to graduation and begin building engagement with the School and fellow alumni after graduation.Schar School's four LCs are open to undergraduates at a variety of levels:The Democracy Lab, a first-year residential community;Pillars of Research Learning Community, a semester-long, non-residential academic community;International Relations Policy Task Force, a year-long, non-residential academic community; andJurisprudence Learning Community, a year-long, non-residential academic community.About the Position:This is a temporary position. 20 hours/week from September 24, 2022 - February 9, 2023, in-person on the Fairfax campus during regular business hours; occasional evening hours required.Responsibilities: Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Student Engagement, the Schar School Undergraduate Learning Communities Assistant supports LC administration and initiatives with a focus on student retention. The position will work as a member of Schar School's student services team and supports the faculty directors of the four Schar School LCs. The position will coordinate a wide array of program and event logistics and communications; compile data for LC program needs; and address administrative and logistical problems that impact LC students and faculty. Some specific responsibilities include the following:Participate in biweekly meetings with the Schar School marketing team and assist with ongoing LC outreach and marketing efforts;Assist in supporting the activities of the Democracy Lab:Attend biweekly meetings with Housing and Residence Life (HRL) Community Director and Resident Assistants, and Democracy Lab Faculty Director;Attend monthly meetings hosted by HRL for all LLC coordinators; Coordinate paperwork for HRL;Assist in supporting the activities for all four LCs:Work closely with the Faculty Directors in coordinating events and activities;Assist with spring planning, including recruitment and enrollment of student participants in LCs for spring and make updates to courses and programming as needed;Assist with coordination of on- and off-campus programming, field trips, and spring break international trip (including advertising, room reservations, RSVPs, communications, and event logistics); andAdminister end-of-semester assessments to students.Required Qualifications:Ability to balance multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment and maintain a positive attitude in a busy environment;Experience with Microsoft Office and web tools;Exceptional written and oral communication skills; andAdvanced and effective organizational skills; fiscal management skills.Preferred Qualifications:Experience in the use of technology to support data management, including Qualtrics; andExperience in a professional, diverse, fast-paced environment, preferably in an educational setting.
