The Senior Attorney provides legal counsel and represents clients in civil litigation and other legal proceedings. Leads the preparation of cases for defense and participates in trial preparation, preparation of amicus briefs, discovery, and negotiations. Collaborates with senior management to develop strategic plans to achieve the organization's litigation goals.

Responsibilities

  • Serving as "first chair" or a lead attorney in litigation matters, leading the planning, strategy, and execution of the case, with ultimate responsibility to the court and the clients for the outcome of the trial or settlement.
  • Leading investigations of potential cases to determine whether to recommend filing a lawsuit or an amicus brief.
  • Performing legal analyses.
  • Drafting pleadings, briefs, and other court filings.
  • Conducting written and oral discovery, including taking and defending depositions.
  • Leading mediation and settlement negotiations on behalf of the clients.
  • Arguing procedural and dispositive motions.
  • Researching and writing amicus briefs.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree and at least eight years of post-J.D. experience as a practicing attorney, with at least two years of experience as first chair or a lead counsel in litigation matters with responsibility for leading the planning, strategy, and execution of complex cases.
  • Must be a member in good standing of the District of Columbia Bar or be eligible for admission to the District of Columbia Bar.
  • Experience in legal matters concerning low-income or older populations desirable.
  • Experience with class/collective actions, especially on behalf of plaintiffs, preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully litigate cases individually or in teams.
  • Highly self-motivated and entrepreneurial.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced professional environment.
  • Discretion and respect for confidentiality are essential.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • In-office/open office environment with the ability to work effectively surrounded by moderate noise.

Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA)

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as telecommuting workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work and telecommuting can only be done within the United States and its territories.
