Duties

  • Develops internal technical and administrative policies and procedures relating to interior design requirements, and coordinates the impact with other areas, e.g., consultant/advisory services for design, review and construction support.
  • Plans and schedules interior design production, adjusts work procedures to accommodate available resources and improves work methods and procedures used to produce work products.
  • Prepares contract documents, which include drawings, specifications and design analysis for a variety of complex facilities.
  • Utilizes the software system to develop both building and furniture related Interior Design packages.

  • The work is mostly sedentary; however, some walking, bending and climbing is required to inspect buildings at various stages of construction and to investigate reported problems.
  • Work is primarily in an office setting and no unusual hazards exist. May be subject to related construction hazards when visiting and investigating onsite operations, repair and improvement or construction activities.
  • Some travel is required to conduct architectural studies on various SSA building facilities and meet with regional representatives.


Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS for this GS-12 Interior Designer position are based on an Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR) for the federal 1008 series which requires specific education OR Specialized Experience.

You must have one of the following:

A. Undergraduate (or Graduate) Education: Major study -- interior design or other field that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in interior design, interior architecture or interior environmental design;

B. Certification of passing the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) examination; or

C.Specialized Experience: at least 52 weeks performingwork primarily concerned with primarily concerned with the design and alteration of interior spaces to meet functional and aesthetic needs.

Specialized Experience must have been gainedin a federal position at or above GS-11 OR (if your position/experience is in another federal pay scale OR outside of federal service) by performing duties at a level equivalent to GS-11.

SAMPLE DUTIES THAT DEMONSTRATE SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE INCLUDE:

(1) identifying, researching or solving problems pertaining to the function or quality of the interior environment;

(2) performing services relative to interior spaces, such as design analysis, space planning or aesthetics;

(3) applying knowledge of interior construction, including building components, building codes, equipment, materials or furnishings;

(4) preparing drawings or documents relative to the design of interior spaces in order to enhance and protect the health, safety or welfare of the public;

(5) integrating mechanical, electrical or structural engineering disciplines within the interior context; and

(6) managing projects (e.g.,, developing cost estimates, evaluating bid proposals, reviewing construction documents, participating in on-site construction visits, conducting pre- and post-occupancy evaluations, developing standards for efficient space management, etc).

Education

You must meet and demonstrate either the education, examination OR Specialized Experience requirement.

Education or examination claims should be stated on your resume and must be supported by a copy of relevant transcript(s) or proof of passing the required examination.

TRANSCRIPTS must include your name, the name of the educational institution, the degree conferred, course title(s), number of credits, grade and date of completion. Highlight relevant courses to ensure they receive consideration.

Certification of examination must be complete and provide all relevant information.

You must submit IOR documents even if you already hold an Interior Designer position.

Unofficial transcripts or screenshots of electronic/web transcripts with the required information will be accepted at the time of application. You must submit your transcripts according to the application submission details of this announcement. Documents will not be accepted via email or regular mail.

If selected, you may be required to provide your official college transcripts prior to the effective date of the personnel action placing you into the new position.

Foreign Education: If your transcript shows education completed in foreign colleges or universities, you must also submit documentation that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in a conventional/accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Additional information

Position to be filled under the provisions of the SSA/AFGE Merit Promotion Plan . Additional selections may be made within 6 months of the date of the initial selection.

COVID-19 VACCINATION REQUIREMENT: As required by Executive Order 14043, Federal employees must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 regardless of the employee's duty location or work arrangement (e.g., telework, remote work, etc.), subject to such exceptions as required by law. If selected, you will be required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 no later than November 22, 2021 and submit documentation of vaccination by November 23, 2021 OR shortly after appointment or onboarding with SSA, if this occurs after November 22, 2021. At the time of selection, SSA will provide additional information regarding what documentation you must provide and how you can request a legally required exception from this requirement.

To ensure compliance with an applicable nationwide preliminary injunction, which may be supplemented, modified, or vacated, depending on the course of ongoing litigation, the Federal Government will take no action to implement or enforce the COVID-19 vaccination requirement pursuant to Executive Order 14043 on Requiring Coronavirus Disease 2019 Vaccination for Federal Employees. Therefore, to the extent a Federal job announcement includes the requirement that applicants must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 pursuant to Executive Order 14043, that requirement does not currently apply. Federal agencies may request information regarding the vaccination status of selected applicants for the purposes of implementing other workplace safety protocols, such as protocols related to masking, physical distancing, testing, travel, and quarantine.

OTHER NOTES:

Successful performance of work in this position and adherence to conditions of this position will be assessed during the 1-year probationary period served by all new appointees (e.g., new to SSA and/or new to this series).

Salary will be set in accordance with locality pay provisions. Federal employees who currently receive a higher locality pay will lose entitlement to that pay.

Position is not authorized to be filled virtually or through outstationing; relocation expenses will not be paid.

Position is on a full-time, flex-time schedule. Alternate Work Schedules may be authorized. Telework may be approved after all conditions for telework have been met.
