Duties

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

The Student Nurse Technician may perform theses duties in a variety of health care settings such as outpatient, inpatient, home or community living care, acute, sub-acute.

Clinical Duties: The Student Nurse Technician is responsible for appropriately utilizing glucose monitoring machine to collect and document appropriate glucose readings for assigned veteran, observation of patients, performs aspects of nursing care to meet patient's needs for the following: Personal Hygiene, Physical comfort, Activity, Exercise, Rest, Nutrition, Elimination, Prevention of Skin Breakdown, Rehabilitative Aspects of Care, Engages in-group activities such as off-station trips, reality orientation, current events and other therapeutic groups, Sets up patient care related equipment, Organizes and obtains routine supplies and equipment, Assists with orienting patient/family to unit routines and policies, monitors patients according to levels of observations i.e. (I:I Veterans as well as Veterans observation status.)

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Enrolled in a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing ( ACEN ) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ( CCNE ).

Grade Determinations:
  • GS-3 - Completion of 1 year of post-high school study and one period of student trainee work experience.
  • GS-4 - Completion of 2 academic years of post-high school study or associate's degree and two periods of student trainee work experience; or (b) completion of 1½ academic years of study and one period of student trainee work experience.
  • GS-5 - Completion of 4 academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent

Note: An academic year of undergraduate education is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in an accredited college or university.

Note: A period of student trainee work experience is the equivalent of 2 months (320 hours) of full-time work experience.

Preferred Experience: Successfully completed Medical/Surgical Nursing 1 with a C grade or better.

Physical Requirements: Duties require extensive periods of sitting, standing, and walking. Working with patients requires regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, pushing, stretching and similar activities. Must be able to physically lift a minimum of 35 pounds.

Additional information

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
