AARP's Community, State and National Affairs Group includes Government Relations, Programs, Volunteer Engagement, Community Outreach and Advocacy at the federal, state and local levels. The Communications Manager engages in the development and implementation of communications strategies for targeted audiences on multi-channel platforms. The Manager designs campaigns to raise awareness and inform, educate, and influence internal and external audiences. This position is responsible for designing campaigns and measuring the effectiveness of campaigns. As the Communications Manager, you are responsible for ensuring content aligns with the enterprise brand strategy and architecture.


  • Develops, distributes, and manages internal communication content and tools for knowledge sharing, collaboration. Draft clear and concise messages, briefs, talking points, summaries, and memos for a variety of channels and audiences.
  • Develops and refines messaging to ensure organizational consistency in all aspects of communication. Leverages internal and external communication platforms to relay complicated content using storytelling and illustrations, and other consumable formats.
  • Analyze, evaluate and synthesize information to inform decisions and drive outcomes.
  • Plans, organizes, and implements special assigned projects working with cross functional teams, as necessary. Determines scope and execution, tracks progress towards milestones, establishes timelines, and evaluates progress. Establishes project communication plans and ensures internal/external stakeholders are informed regarding project processes and impact.
  • Design and maintain internal social media presence. Work with contacts across AARP to ensure consistency of message, alignment and integration of communications.


  • Bachelor's degree and 10+ years of experience in Communications or Chief of Staff position.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment requiring rapid turnaround to support organizational response to emerging issues.
  • Demonstrated experience producing highly effective executive communications for use in a variety of internal channels, including formats such as talking points, presentations and internal newsletters.
  • Proven independent thinker with initiative and flexibility (in terms of job assignments).
  • Must have strong data visualization skills and aptitude for new technologies.
  • In-office/open office environment with the ability to work effectively surrounded by moderate noise.

Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA)

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as telecommuting workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work and telecommuting can only be done within the United States and its territories.
