AARP's Policy, Research and International Affairs leads the development and communication of AARP's public policies and, research and insights on the issues that matter to people 50-plus.

The AARP Public Policy Institute seeks a self-motivated, detail-oriented, and creative graduate student for its Family, Home, and Community (FHC) team. This intern will acquire practical work experience by supporting multiple projects focused on addressing the root causes of disparities in long-term services and supports (LTSS) and caregiving. This position is ideal for candidates looking to develop research expertise and policy development knowledge in LTSS and caregiving issue areas, including expanding home and community-based services, reforming nursing homes, and strengthening supports for family caregivers and the direct care workforce. This internship has an anticipated start date of June 2022 and will go through the end of the year.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare policy briefs, articles, and blog posts
  • Design, write, edit, and fact-check reports and presentations
  • Contribute to data analyses and write-up of research findings
  • Create visual presentations of data analyses and research findings
  • Coordinate with various internal partners and external stakeholders
  • Apply creative thinking and problem-solving to today's most pressing policy challenges facing diverse older adults and their families

Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college/university, rising graduate student, or post-doctoral student and remain academically enrolled throughout the internship or must have previously graduated from college and enrolled in a continuing education program
  • Background in or strong understanding of racial/ethnic disparities in health care and long-term care systems is preferred
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, anticipate project needs, and discern work priorities
  • Ability to work well with diverse populations including gender, race, and sexual orientation
  • Technical proficiency in Microsoft Office programs
  • Knowledge of multiple social media platforms is a plus
  • Exceptional verbal/written communications skills
  • In-office/open office environment with the ability to work effectively surrounded by moderate noise

Compensation and Benefits

The hourly range is $18 for undergraduates, $21 for graduate students, $28 for Ph.D. candidates. Internships are non-exempt positions and are not eligible for employee benefits.

Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA)

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as telecommuting workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work and telecommuting can only be done within the United States and its territories.
