The Business Technology department within Appian is seeking a Principal Cloud Data Engineer to help migrate, scale and grow the existing data warehouse on a cloud database platform. Ideal candidate would have experience designing and building processes and services that supports data ingestion and data transformation capabilities to enable enterprise-wide reporting and analytics functions. This role is based at Appian's Headquarters in McLean, VA. Employees hired for this position will have the opportunity to work in a flexible, hybrid environment.

To be successful in this role, you will:
  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on cloud database platforms and cloud integrations services to scale and grow Appian's Data Warehouse to an Enterprise Data Lake.
  • Apply deep cloud platform knowledge to design and implement data integration and master data processes for cloud database platforms ensuring scalability, flexibility, reliability, and reusability.
  • Optimize load and query performance by applying a deep understanding of cloud data warehouse engines to maximize the benefits of parallelism, concurrency, platform configuration and tuning. Design statistics, compression, indexing, and data storage to maximize performance.
  • Develop and Implement a Dev-Ops framework, incorporating automated code / database migrations (CI/CD), automated regression testing and production support monitoring capabilities.
  • Perform code reviews and recommend best practices to optimize ingestion, transformation and provisioning of certified data assets to Business Intelligence applications.
  • Develop and maintain technical, architectural and functional documentation depicting the interactions of business applications and upstream databases with Appian's Data Warehouse.
  • Work in close tandem with other team members within principles and constructs of agile methodology using project management tools such as JIRA.

Basic Qualifications
  • 7+ years of experience in building and operationalizing Data Warehouses and Data Lakes using cloud database platforms such as Snowflake, Redshift, or Big Query.
  • 7+ years of building continuous integration and deployment and tools chain (e.g., GIT, Jenkins, Azure DevOps, etc.)
  • 5+ years of experience building solutions utilizing various Cloud services such as Google Cloud Platform (GCP), EC2, S3, EMR, Kinesis, RDS, Redshift/Spectrum, Lambda, Glue, Athena, API gateway, etc.
  • Experience building APIs in Python/Java/C#/Unix, Kinesis, Kafka and/or shell scripting to build and deploy data pipelines.
  • 5+ years of experience of configuration management and Infrastructure-as-Code experience (e.g. Terraform, Ansible)
  • Advanced knowledge of data modeling (transactional and analytical) and SQL skills to manipulate data and prepare the data for BI reporting and data analytics.
  • Experience supporting and troubleshooting production applications or workloads in a cloud-based environment.

Nice to Haves:
  • Experience with API management and integrations
