Are you a professional Spanish translator looking to make a difference? Metro is seeking a translation services expert to help improve how we communicate with diverse customers and communities. At Metro, we're always striving to eliminate barriers to transit. In this new role, you will work with a team of communications and outreach professionals to manage the translation process and ensure all customers have meaningful access to the system.

Minimum Qualifications

Education
  • Bachelor's Degree in Spanish, Linguistics, Communications, Social Sciences or related field.

Experience
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of translation/interpretation or relevant experience.

Certification/Licensure
  • The employee must be certified at hiring or acquire the following certification within one (1) year of their hire date and maintain it while in this job. Certified Interpreter and/or Translator with documentation indicating the certifying assessment body (Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR), American Translators Association (ATA), etc.), subject matter expertise, proficiency level, specific language combinations, proof of valid certification, and direction of translation (e.g., Spanish -> English, English -> Spanish)

Mission Essential Designation:

In accordance with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) this job has been identified as critical to mission essential functions. Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events.

Job Summary

The Translation Services Manager will direct all of Metro's non-English language communications, including managing all translation services and contracts. The ideal candidate is bilingual, fluent in English and Spanish, to convey ideas and concepts from one language to another. In addition, the incumbent prepares written translations of customer-facing materials such as brochures, webpages, and signage. The incumbent possesses an understanding of the non-English market, identifies knowledge gaps to improve communications that resonate with Metro's diverse, non-English customers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Translates a variety of written, technical, legal, and other informational material from English to Spanish and coordinate requests for language services.
  • Ensures accuracy of translated materials by proofreading and implementing quality control edits for English to Spanish language documents.
  • Provides translation support to audiences that is clear, reflective of meaning with appropriate tone and intent, to Metro departments on special projects, and community outreach events.
  • Serves as a COTR for translations contracts and manages the procurement process as the agency representative for service, to ensure compliance.
  • Establishes and develops processes within the organization for the administration and implementation of language policies and procedures for the Authority.
  • Demonstrates expertise coordinating multiple translation projects and overseeing budgets exceeding $1M.
