Duties

As the Deputy Chief Economist, you will:

  • Provide leadership and direction for major functions including complex economic research, development of analytical techniques for economic studies and special analyses of major economic issues.
  • Participate in long and short range planning, program development and policy formulation; provide technical, economic and statistical advice to the Chief Economist; review and evaluate the conduct of Department of Commerce's (DOC) economic affairs programs
  • Develop and/or revise basic economic and statistical policies and plan and conduct major economic studies affecting or related to the economy as a whole.
  • Provide authoritative advice and analysis on: U.S. economic performance and factors affecting this performance, the design and implementation of complex economic research, and a broad array of economic issues.
  • Review and evaluate the economic impact of proposed legislation and assist the Office of General Counsel in preparing DOC positions on such legislation, and reviews and comments on regulatory analyses prepared by agencies within and outside of DOC.

An individual's total experience must demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position. Due to COVID-19, the Office of the Under Secretary for Economic Affairs is currently in an expanded telework posture. If selected, you may be expected to temporarily telework, even if your home is located outside the local commuting area. Once employees are permitted to return to the office, you will be expected to report to the duty station listed on this announcement within 30 calendar days. At that time, you may be eligible to request to continue to telework one or more days a pay period consistent with the Office of the Under Secretary for Economic Affairs' telework policy and approval from your supervisor.

Professional and Technical Qualifications (PTQs):

PTQ#1 - Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and theories of economics and extensive experience working with economic and demographic statistics.

PTQ#2 - Extensive experience in economics research and in the use of econometrics techniques.

PTQ#3 - Expertise in developing, evaluating, and communicating public policy alternatives based on sound economic analysis.

Education

  • Degree: economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus.

  • Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
