High Containment Suite Laboratory ManagerGeorge Mason University's Institute for Biohealth Innovation invites applications for a full-time High Containment Suite Laboratory Manager. The High Containment Suite Laboratory Manager will operate in a BSL-3/A-BSL-3 laboratory and will be responsible for training, monitoring safety and compliance, and managing BRL technical staff to ensure compliance with CDC and USDA regulations.George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason's academic and culturally inclusive environment.About the Department:The Institute for Biohealth Innovation harnesses the collective talent of more than 300 GMU faculty and staff and thousands of students across 34 academic departments. The IBI connects Mason researchers with potential collaborators, both within the university and externally, to take on some of biohealth's biggest challenges.The BRL, is a core facility overseen by the Institute. The 52,000 square-foot regional biocontainment laboratory (RBL) was established in 2010 as one of 12 NIAID-funded RBLs to support infectious disease research and foster collaborations with other national and global laboratories. It operates as a central core facility to advance research and develop novel diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines against viral and bacterial infectious agents by a diverse population of internal and external investigators. The facility is capable of housing multiple species and has a variety of established animal models, with an emphasis on aerosolized exposures. The BRL is fully approved and licensed for work by the CDCand USDA and is accredited by AAALAC.About the Position: Primary responsibilities include:Serve as a Designated Trainer for initial mentorship training for common safety and compliance procedures;Supervise and mentor BRL technical staff, providing training, direction, and mentorship to safely and effectively execute research experiments;Serve as subject matter expert with regard to common/shared research equipment;Coordinate with Operations Manager and EHS to properly maintain common/shared equipment including preventative maintenance, service, repair, calibration, and certification;Participate in review of plans, policies, and procedures for the select agent program and the containment suite;Establish quality standards; develop, maintain, and troubleshoot standard operating procedures;Serve as designated trainer for common/shared equipment;Manage activities in the containment suite to optimize safety and lab procedures;Serve as link between Principal Investigators (PI's), Operations, and Safety staff regarding ongoing and upcoming work in the containment suite, changes to work flow, new equipment, equipment maintenance, etc;Monitor staff compliance (particularly as it pertains to use of laboratory equipment, usage logs, documentation of agents used and decontaminations performed, etc.;Coordinate transition from one agent to another, or one project to another within the containment suite (particularly as it pertains to common spaces and shared equipment);Oversee Decontamination Procedures in the Containment Suite; andServe as Waste Management Facility Operator.Required Qualifications:Master's degree in scientific, engineering, or related field or equivalent relevant experience;Technical experience (typically 5 years) working in a high containment facility with experience across several pieces of equipment;Demonstrated experience (typically 3 years) managing laboratory safety, operations and/or personnel;Knowledge of biosafety levels and facility requirements for BSL2/ABSL2, BSL3/ABSL3 laboratories;Knowledge in laboratory SOPs in microbiology, virology, and cell culture;Excellent collaborative, interpersonal skills;Effective verbal and written communication skills; Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems, multi-task, and work with minimal supervision; andMust be able to pass Department of Justice (DOJ) Security Risk Assessment.Preferred Qualifications:Seven (7) or more years of experience working in a high containment facility with experience across several pieces of equipment;A terminal degree in a scientific, engineering, or related field (Ph.D. or similar);Excellent verbal and written communication skills; andExperience in a large dispersed university or industrial environment.
