Serves as a direct assistant to the pharmacist, requiring performance of duties with an understanding of the workflow, the pharmacy routine, and the
responsibilities of the pharmacy programs.

Work independently and under the direction of a pharmacist.

Demonstrate the ability to carry out the instructions as given by a pharmacist. Performs all the duties of lower graded technicians.

Assists in other patient care areas to maintain the consistency of overall pharmacy services.

Assignments of work schedule and tours would involve both inpatient and outpatient pharmacy services, these positions would focus mainly on inpatient services primarily.

Inpatient and outpatient services may include such areas as aseptic admixture preparation including cytoxic agents, automatic and Omnicell stock replenishment, maintenance and operation of automated prepackaging storage and dispensing equipment, and properly packaging with documentation of single unit of use medications.

Knowledgeable on pharmacy policy and Medical Center Memorandums and must be able to follow them.

Knowledgeable on pharmacy production reports and how to interpret them for comparison to individual production.

Uses current pharmaceutical knowledge and technical application in the preparation and dispensing of medication and supplies for outpatients, subject to the final check by a pharmacist.

Provides technical support for the unit dose medication program. Processes unit dose medication orders and fills unit does medication orders and cassettes.

Performs final review of unit dosed medications when prepared by another technician to be dispensed to inpatient areas (med carts, ward stock), and/or fills unit-dose carts independently without secondary review when necessary.

Prepares inpatient drug orders including all medicinal dosage forms such as chemotherapy, intravenous admixtures, oral solids, etc., according to established procedures and protocols.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Must be available for variable tours: days, afternoons, nights, weekends and holidays as needed. Subject to change based on the needs of the agency.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

BASIC REQUIREMENT :

CITIZENSHIP: United States Citizenship. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.) Policy.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience.

CERTIFICATION: Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: Psychologists must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Regulations.

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

GRADE DETERMINATION:

Experience. One year experience at the next lower level and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk.

CERTIFICATION: PTCB certification is required at this grade level and above.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action.
2. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.
3. Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.
4. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products.
5. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.
6. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.

Assignments. Pharmacy technicians may be assigned to any area of the pharmacy including expanded distributive function assignments; for example, assignment as team leaders for specific process improvement teams involving technical areas or performing more highly complex duties including preparation of oncology agents for clinical pharmacy specialists. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-6. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-6.

Physical Requirements: The work requires repetitive motion, standing, walking, reaching, stooping, lifting heavy objects up to 50 pounds, pushing heavy or bulky carts and at times may be physically demanding, sometimes for extended periods of time.
