Controls Manager - Well Managed Team

As a Controls Manager for the Installment Lending Well Managed Team, you will have the chance to lead and oversee Control Development, Control Enhancement, Control Execution, Control Testing and Reporting, ensuring controls work meets quality standards. You will manage a team of control executors to ensure controls adequately mitigate risk, audit readiness and aid in meeting business objectives.

The Installment Lending team is launching a Point of Sale lending product in 2022. Unlike many other Capital One products, our product is launching using a flexible white label banking-as-a-service platform. A critical part of this rollout is the development and enhancement of our control environment for which the Controls Lead will be responsible. A new team, the Installment Lending team is evolving and ripe for carefully designed processes, documented controls, and provides an opportunity for tremendous career growth.

As the leader for the IL Controls Team, you will have the opportunity to create, maintain and Implement a Well Managed Controls Framework. You will be expected to learn from established Capital One practices, apply them where feasible, but rely on out-of the box thinking to build and enhance the control environment for this new product and execution environment. You will be responsible for leading and overseeing a team of controls experts to perform the control activities associated with our product and work with appropriate parties to investigate, resolve and report on control activities and results in a well managed and timely manner. As we scale and improve upon our product, you will be responsible for expanding our control suite to account for new features and hardening our existing processes to help give us the confidence to grow. You'll lead and oversee 5 major buckets of work:
  • Control Creation: Identify needed controls for a new product. Lead and supervise actions needed to develop controls that mitigate compliance, operational and credit risk.
  • Control Execution: Lead the team to execute controls in accordance with intent.
  • Control Testing: Lead the team to test controls for design and operating effectiveness, ensuring controls are executed as intended and the Enterprise Control Standard is met.
  • Control Improvements: Harden and improve our control environment to drive quality and efficiency gains.
  • Control Reporting : Work with the DAs and Controls team to create consistent, repeatable, timely reporting of controls status and results.

In addition to those five buckets of work, you'll be a key leader in the IL operations organization, and be a peer to some truly amazing coworkers that are passionate about both innovation and quality.

You will partner with teams across the organization to ensure adequate risk mitigation. This role is critical to one of the most innovative product launches currently taking place at Capital One.

We are looking for someone dedicated to doing great work with a keen attention to detail. You will need a flexible attitude and willingness to collaborate and learn in a fast paced, startup-like environment. Your communication and influence skills will need to be top-notch. The ideal candidate for this position would be pretty nerdy about controls, finding joy in the proper construction and mapping of a well-managed control environment. It's also a big plus if you have experience with a Risk and Controls System of Record.

General Responsibilities:
  • Demonstrate curiosity and aptitude to understand the control environment within Capital One, and how it applies to a new product
  • Lead your team and foster an inclusive culture that enables the team to elevate each other
  • Oversee work for your team while working on other projects independently and timely - ensuring timely escalation of impediments
  • Plan objectives/required actions to complete the 4 major buckets of work, a project or process redesign effort (evaluating solutions and resources, assessing current state)
  • Report Controls Team status and control results
  • Build productive relationships with our Risk and Compliance Partners

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or military experience
  • At least 2 years of experience in People Management
  • At least 2 years of experience in Process Management, Project Management or Risk Management
  • At least 3 years of experience working with controls that mitigate or manage risk

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 2+ years of experience working with PRIME or Fuse (GRC System of Record)
  • 2+ years of COSO internal control or the Capital One Control Standard
  • 2+ years of experience working with external vendors
  • 4+ years of experience in People Management
  • 4+ years of experience working with controls that mitigate or manage risk
  • 5+ years of experience in Process Management, Project Management or Risk Management
  • Lean, Agile, Six Sigma, Business Process Management, or Project Management certification
