Job Announcement

Provides full range of extensive customer service including outreach, reader advisory, circulation, and information/information referral services to targeted customers of the Access Services library (AS); Government Center employees and the general public. Targeted AS customers are individuals of all ages with temporary or permanent disabilities who are unable to read normal print or who are unable to visit a local library. Government Center customers are Fairfax county employees and members of the general public. Specific duties include:

  • Provides essential information about services provided by AS, including the Talking Book (TB) program from the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS) and the AS home delivery and deposit site programs.
  • Assists in downloading books using the FCPL and NLS systems.
  • Provides training to AS customers in accessing and requesting materials from NLS and FCPL library catalogs.
  • Performs entry of patron and collection bibliographic data.
  • Is familiar with and provides training for staff, volunteers and customers on adaptive/assistive technologies such as the TB reading equipment supplied by NLS, large type screen, voice synthesizer, Braille Printer and optical character reader.
  • Assists with marketing AS collections and services to current and potential customers with disabilities, their caregivers, friends, and relatives, and to the local community.
  • Drives county vehicle to assist in the exchange, delivery and pickup of AS resources.
  • Communicates and interprets library polices to the public, staff and volunteers.
  • Responds to the needs of customers at the AS public service desk; and performs essential public service and administrative tasks.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned to further the goals and objectives of Access Services, Fairfax County Public Library.
Note: The assigned functional areas of the position are general administrative support, library services, human services, and customer service.

This job announcement may be used to fill future part-time Access Services Office Assistant (Administrative Assistant II) vacancies; current and/or future vacancies may be job-shared positions working 20 hour per week

The selected applicant's starting hourly rate will be in the minimum to midpoint range ($17.3719- $23.1627) of the advertised compensation range. Promotional rules apply for current Fairfax County Government and Fairfax County Public Schools employees.

Purchasing
Orders, inventories, receives, and/or shelves routine supplies;
Reviews invoices/packing slips to ensure shipment is correct and follows up on
discrepancies;
Tracks expenditures.

Produces and electronically distributes simple documents (e.g., flyers).

Office Management
Maintains a system for tracking the progress of work;
Orients new employees on procedures and systems.

General Administrative
Performs alpha and/or numeric filing;

Receptionist/Public Contact
Refers calls;

Proofs spelling.

Information Systems/Software
Performs data entry into multiple screens.

Payroll
Inputs simple or occasional Human Capital Management Enterprise Resource Planning system entries, with review of supervisor (e.g., simple T&A).

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to high school graduation and one year of experience providing administrative support in the assigned functional area(s).

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid driver's license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • One or more years of experience providing customer service and administrative support to the public.
  • Some demonstrated experience working with an Integrated Library System (ILS).
  • Technical proficiency and experience using MS Office Suite applications (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Must be detail-oriented, flexible, adaptable, and have experience working in a team environment and possess strong communication skills both oral and written.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs may be subject to a weekly testing requirement. Vaccinated employees and employees with a medical or religious exemption will complete the attestation online on their first day of employment or shortly thereafter.
  • The appointee to the position must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check, Child Protective Services Registry check, and driving record check.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle (car/van).
  • Ability to travel to various locations throughout Fairfax County, the cities of Fairfax and Falls Church.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to input, access, and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to perform repetitive hand, arm, wrist and shoulder movements. Ability to push and pull 4-wheeled book bins filled at 90% capacity, requiring 20 pounds of initial (starting) force, and a sustained force of 10 pounds. after initial acceleration; ability to push and pull 4-wheeled book carts filled at 70% capacity, requiring 14 pounds of initial (starting) force, and a sustained force of 7 pounds after initial acceleration; Ability to lift up to 25 pounds. Ability to stand and shelve books. Ability to walk up and down stairs with occasional need to stand for extended periods of time (2-3 hours). Ability to stoop, bend and reach. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
