Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking a Communications Manager to join its Public Relations team. This team of publicists and publicity coordinators drives external promotion of The Post's brand at a time of rapid growth for the company. The PR team works with reporters and editors across the newsroom to extend the reach of Post reporting through broadcast and digital earned media and serves as a strategic partner with business stakeholders to promote company initiatives to key audiences. As a Communications Manager, you will play an integral role in the development, coordination and execution of PR strategies that support company objectives. You will oversee and nurture a team of publicists and coordinators, as well as contribute to the development of more efficient and effective internal processes. A history of building strategies that get results and past experience managing a team are a plus. The manager position reports to the Director of Communications.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop and manage a team of publicists and coordinators, providing feedback, coaching and motivation to engage and retain talent.
  • Identify, champion and execute storytelling opportunities.
  • Evaluate media coverage and provide regular updates to Communications senior leadership and stakeholders.
  • Respond to media inquiries and actively assist/facilitate staff interactions with the media.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment and to mobilize large-scale projects and initiatives.
  • Maintain close and communicative relationships with broadcast producers and industry/beat reporters.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS
  • Excellent news judgment, communication and interpersonal skills, including writing, proofreading and speaking.
  • Ability to establish rapport and develop credibility from colleagues and external business partners.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Careful attention to detail with good follow-through.
  • Strategic, collaborative and creative thinker who can adapt and prioritize moment to moment.
  • Self-motivated with strong decision-making skills.
  • Proficiency with Word, Excel, Outlook, Cision or related journalist database.
  • Bachelor's Degree is required
  • At least seven (7) years of related work experience.
