Position Information

Arlington County, VA Government, one of the most progressive local governments in the country, seeks the services of a CYBERSECURITY ENGINEER.

The Cybersecurity Engineer will report to the Information Security Team within the Security, Privacy, and Regulatory Affairs Division. This position is responsible for the development and implementation of IT security policy recommendations and for providing complex technical knowledge in support of the team's operational responsibilities.

Responsibilities include:
  • Proactively evaluating the County's IT Security policy and practice and make recommendations as to how the County might adopt best practices;
  • Remaining current on existing and emerging technologies to assist in the development and management of the County's security posture in an ever-evolving threat landscape;
  • Performing security analysis and system monitoring, coordinating responses to incidents, and providing reports on cybersecurity incidents, impacts, and remediation;
  • Configuring security components of network and endpoint devices, firewalls, and virtual private network (VPN) appliances, network access control (NAC) systems, security information, event management (SIEM) systems and intrusion detection systems (IDS/IPS);
  • Managing requests and inquiries and resolving issues escalated from the Technology Services Center; and
  • Building test network and endpoint device prototypes to assess and analyze system vulnerability.

Selection Criteria

  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in computer science, cybersecurity, information systems management, or an equivalent field; plus
  • Substantial operational cybersecurity experience with complex networks and endpoint systems.
SUBSTITUTION: Additional full-time qualifying experience may substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.


  • Certification in one or more Information Security professional tracks (SANS, ISC2, ISACA, EC Council, CompTIA, or similar).
  • Real-world knowledge of information security policy frameworks, systems, networks, and applications; and
  • Knowledge of current and emerging technologies and threats via professional groups, trade publications, internal and external training, independent research, and study, etc.
