The Arlington County Public Library

is seeking a proactive, team-oriented, and strategic thinking

professional to join a dynamic and dedicated Library Leadership Team

committed to building a sustainable community by providing information,

promoting the pleasure of reading and providing welcoming facilities for learning and discourse.

This key leadership role will provide strategic leadership in the planning, development, management, assessment, and coordination of library public services and activities across multiple library locations, work units, and cross-cutting public service areas. Working in close collaboration with other Library departments and members of the Public Services Administrative Team, this position ensures the effective coordination of library activities. The major areas managed by this position are services to adults, facility and meeting room use, collection policies in coordination with Materials Management Division, community outreach strategies, and other topics or areas as assigned on an as-needed basis by the Public Division Chief or Library Leadership Team.

The Assistant Division Chief works closely with staff to support the library's core values, develop staff competencies, and to achieve the library's goals. The Assistant Division Chief will be an effective advocate, a collaborative partner with all stakeholders, and will both participate in existing workflows and bring innovative and creative strategies in order to fulfill and advance the library's mission.

This leadership position develops strong, positive relationships with staff; fosters trust, integrity, respect, and teamwork; helps to chart a clear course for welcoming and inclusive library programs and services and strong collections; builds productive partnerships with internal stakeholders, volunteers, and administrative staff.

Specific duties include:
  • Managing operations at five library branch locations and/or departments;
  • Providing mentorship, leadership, and supervision to managers including development, training, and performance evaluations;
  • Contributing to the planning and evaluation of system-wide policies and best practices as a part of the Public Services Leadership Team;
  • Identifying efficiencies, best practices, or gaps in current services, recommending and implementing new service strategies and leading change;
  • Making informed decisions based on data, including interaction information, staffing audits, and location-specific reports; and
  • Participating in Library and County committees or workgroups to further the Library's mission.

Selection Criteria
Minimum: Master's Degree in Library Science or Library & Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution. At least three years progressively responsible supervisory experience in a public library setting.

Desirables: Preference will be given to applicants with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Strategic and operational planning;
  • Leading a workgroup of peers in a team environment;
  • In-depth experience in project management and developing short-term and long-range plans and goals, including assessment and prioritization in a library setting ;
  • Experience evaluating staffing and workflow changes;
  • Experience managing areas such as services to adults, facility and meeting room use, collection policies and community outreach strategies ;
  • The ability to interact effectively and build productive relationships with managers, employees, clients, and community members;
  • In-depth knowledge of and experience in Library program performance assessment and continuous process improvement; and
  • A record of significant accomplishments and innovation in a large, complex Library system in a diverse, urban, socio-economic multicultural diverse environment.
