Specialized experience is at least one year of experience, equivalent in responsibility to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service, managing an educational or research program at a museum, university, or a cultural institution, participating regularly in scholarly gatherings throughout an academic year, and maintaining a leadership role in art history and/or related disciplines through active publishing and scholarship in a museum, university or similar cultural institution.
GS-14
Specialized experience is at least one year of experience, equivalent in responsibility to the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service, managing an educational or research program at a museum, university, or a cultural institution, participating regularly in scholarly gatherings throughout an academic year, and maintaining a leadership role in art history and/or related disciplines through active publishing and scholarship in a museum, university, or similar cultural institution.

Mastery knowledge of and demonstrated experience as an educator and productive scholar in art history or a related discipline actively involved in professional education activities, including research, writing, course preparation and delivery, preparation of publications, lectures, presentation of papers at professional meetings. Mastery knowledge of and advanced background in the discipline of art history, including method, theory, historiography, criticism and the current state of the field, and specialization, as well as knowledge of professional journals and the literature of art history and related fields, and/or professional experience in academe or museums. Knowledge of management and organizational principles and practices along with a comprehensive knowledge of planning, programming, guidelines, and process sufficient to manage and oversee the Center's Academic Programs and Publications in accordance with broad National Gallery program policies and objectives. Knowledge of academic and administrative procedures, as well as writing and editing skills. Knowledge of concepts, principles, processes, techniques, and methods used to gather, analyze, and evaluate complex and sensitive administrative, programmatic, and operational, management, and policy issues. Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative techniques sufficient to review drafts for accuracy and adherence to contract, enforce budgets and deadlines, and approve production details for print and web-based publications. Skill supervising, planning, and coordinating the work of others. Knowledge of concepts, principles, processes, techniques, and methods used to gather, analyze, and evaluate complex and sensitive administrative, programmatic, and operational, management, and policy issues.

Basic Requirements:
Degree: that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours in a field related to the work of the position to be filled, of which at least 9 semester hours must have been in education courses.

Combination of education and experience -- at least 24 semester hours in a field related to the work of the position to be filled, of which at least 9 semester hours must have been in education courses, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience must reflect the level and kind described in C below.

Four years of experience that demonstrated a thorough understanding of the principles and practices underlying the work of this series. This experience must have been of such character and diversity to demonstrate that the applicant possesses an understanding of the field comparable to that normally acquired through successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university.

At least 1 full academic year of professional teaching experience. This experience is defined as full and primary responsibility, under general supervision, for instruction of assigned students in an accredited school or institution. This includes responsibility for preparing and presenting lessons and for evaluating students' progress, including a determination of the students' success or failure according to established criteria. Serving in an assistant capacity to a professor without the authority to determine the students' success or failure to meet course requirements does not meet this criterion.

As the Education Program Specialist, you will:
- Manage Academic programs, which include, but are not limited to, symposia, conferences, colloquies, seminars, lectures, and study days.
- Plan and execute approximately 8 to 12 meetings per year, develops themes and topics, identifies participants, finalizes program schedule, prepares budgets, and considers co-sponsorship, in consultation with the Dean.
- Initiate letters of invitation and contracts for participants. Drafts and reviews final materials, including print and web-based announcements, abstracts, bibliographies, and reading lists.
- Oversee the Center's program of publications, which includes papers presented at Center meetings as well as commissioned research publications.
- Identify scholarly editors and authors in consultation with the Dean and the National Gallery of Art's Publishing Office; manages the authors' contract process and maintains communication with them and other subject-matter specialists throughout the process.
- Develop, organize, and direct a long-term research project within the Center for the wider benefit of art history and related disciplines.
- Conduct scholarly research in the United States and abroad in area of expertise; actively publishes articles, essays, and reviews; presents lectures at scholarly meetings; participates regularly in conferences in the field; and occasionally teaches a university-level lecture course or seminar.
- Perform the full range of supervisory responsibilities, to include: planning work to be accomplished; setting and adjusting priorities, and preparing schedules for completion of work; assigning work based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty, requirements of assignments, and capabilities of employees; developing performance standards; evaluating work performance of direct reports; giving advice, counsel and/or instructions to employees on both work and administrative matters.
- Participate in long-range planning with the Dean and Associate Dean on the identification of future candidates for appointment to the Center's Board of Advisors, senior professorships, research associates/assistants, and Mellon lecturers.
