Westat is seeking a Vice President, Data Science to lead data science efforts across the organization. In this role you will coordinate, build, and strengthen Westat's data science capabilities; bringing additional visibility internally and externally to these capabilities; and drive strategic planning, hiring, and coordination across Westat to meet the evolving needs in this area. This role reports to the Vice President and Director of Statistics and Data Science.
Responsibilities would include:
· Lead strategic planning, innovation, and capacity building in data science. Develop a vision and focus on collaboration with practices, IT (Information Technology) and statistics.
· Serve as a thought leader both internally and externally.
· Build and strengthen a community of practice around data science capabilities within Westat. Coordinate across practices, IT, and statistics, facilitating cross-practice collaboration and knowledge sharing. Support development of data science resources across Westat.
· Build and lead a group of data scientists to serve as experts, as needed.
· Mentor staff across Westat and suggest additional appropriate professional development. Assist in hiring staff with needed skills.
· Serve as senior technical advisor on projects providing domain expertise and creative integration of advanced hardware and software to deliver computational solutions that address complex data and analytic challenges.
· Support business development opportunities by bringing best practices and creative data science solutions (similar to how statisticians support these activities), including participating in capture activities. Serve as main contact to coordinate data science resources. Lead business development opportunities as needed.
· Monitor competitive intelligence and share the knowledge broadly within Westat.
Basic Qualifications:
· Master's degree and 20+ years of experience or a Doctoral degree and 15+ years of experience
· Demonstrated success leading data science programs and/or bioinformatics programs including technical and programmatic concept development, planning, coordination, integration, and execution that can be supported by data science and deep learning techniques
· Technical knowledge of a variety of data science skills (natural language processing, machine learning techniques, AI, network analyses, collaboration tools, programming skills (R & Python in particular), systems engineering & systems architecture, database management), and bring in user design experience
· Publication record of peer-reviewed journal articles, technical reports, other thought pieces in the public domain in data science
· Presentation record at national conferences
Minimum Qualifications:
· Supervisory/management experience
· Strong project management skills
· Ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical experts
