Here at Appian, we're passionate about technology. We love making it, and we love using it. Joining Appian Engineering will provide you with the opportunity to learn in an environment that values cross-functional collaboration and is committed to personal and professional growth. We want to revolutionize the way people work, and in doing so, we develop the Appian platform to be simple so our customers can thrive.

As a senior learning experience designer, you'll help lead the design and development of an all new program for continuing education in our department that helps to grow and retain a highly-skilled and diverse workforce of technical professionals. You'll foster and evangelize a culture of learning and continuous improvement across our team. You'll create innovative learning solutions for employees to strengthen existing skill sets and explore new ones.

What is Appian? It's an application development platform that lets users of varying technical ability build powerful cloud and mobile apps with flexible, visual models instead of clunky custom code. Join our fast-growing, agile team, and make a big impact!

Appian is headquartered in the McLean, Virginia area, and we are supportive of both Remote and Hybrid work environments.

Responsibilities:
  • Consult with leadership and senior members of the department to identify needs and prioritize them based on level of impact
  • Conduct needs analysis to diagnose skill gaps and performance inconsistencies
  • Work with SMEs to identify learning objectives, design learning experiences (both synchronous and asynchronous), and develop content that meets the needs of the topic and audience. Learning modalities may include (but aren't limited to) coaching and mentorship, job aids, e-learning, and hands-on activities/projects.
  • Act as a consultant and provide suggestions and guidance on instructional design strategies based on the unique needs of a team or role
  • Develop ways to evaluate the outcomes of learning solutions to determine if objectives were met. Use this feedback to improve iteratively.
  • Leverage volunteer resources to oversee support of various existing learning resources and technologies
  • Act as the primary liaison between the Engineering department and the corporate Talent Development team to communicate the needs of the dept and help rollout company-wide initiatives
  • Communicate regularly with stakeholders to ensure transparency of active and planned projects, including their goals, status, timeline, results, etc.
  • Help to cultivate a culture of learning and continuous development throughout the department

To be successful in this role, you will need to:
  • Build relationships across a variety of different roles and levels in the organization
  • Manage multiple projects at once with minimal supervision
  • Use ADDIE principles to perform needs analysis, design, develop, and evaluate the impact of a variety of learning solutions with deference for speed of development and scale of delivery
  • Collaborate closely with SMEs and manage projects with multiple contributors
  • Communicate clearly and frequently with management and stakeholders and demonstrate strong writing, project management, and organizational skills
  • Be creative, innovative, and resourceful. Take initiative proactively.
  • Speak to a technical audience, develop technical materials (working with SMEs), and assimilate technical information and ideas quickly - enough to be able to ask the right questions!

Some of the tools and resources we will equip you with include:
  • An on-boarding program that will provide hands-on experience with our platform, and the processes and technologies we use in the Engineering department.
  • Our team works primarily with K, Java, Git; while also having the autonomy to use other technologies as needed to accomplish our goals more effectively.
  • Personal Indie Time (dedicated time to build whatever you want with whomever you want) and annual hackathons that provide opportunities for growth and leadership, which are activities that inspire others and get creative juices flowing.

Basic qualifications:

BS in Instructional Design, Education, or related field. Masters preferred.

Preferred Experience Level
  • 5-7 years designing and developing content and curricula in support of enterprise learning and development programs
  • Demonstrated success identifying and achieving learning outcomes
  • Strong familiarity with instructional design methods and tools, including Rise 360
