Principal Risk Associate

Job Description:

The Chief of Staff (COS) group provides governance and oversight to a number of activities in the RM organization such as senior management committee coordination, Board reporting, and the Chief Risk Officer's approval and attestation requests and manages horizontal services for the Risk Office and COS organization such as risk reporting for our Advisory and Process teams, information retention management and associate engagement efforts. In addition, the Chief of Staff group leads organizational effectiveness efforts such as a monthly chief of staff forums and division-wide change management practices.

We are seeking a Principal Associate to execute risk reporting within the COS group. The reporting function supports a variety of content management needs related to assessments performed by 2nd and 3rd LOD units, as well as reporting of assessment outcomes including issues or observations. In addition, reporting activities include development of data packs supporting our advisor and process teams, coordination of content for business reviews, scorecards and risk oversight materials as well as development of new reporting capabilities and general support for emerging data needs.

General Responsibilities:
  • Support timely data sourcing, processing, and analytics within monthly data pack refreshes and updates to risk reporting materials
  • Coordinate collection of data and supporting context from internal performers, stakeholder teams and data sources external to the Chief of Staff team, including cross-Risk Management units, Finance, Technology, Audit and Regulatory Relations
  • Engage with data providers and teams to ensure process integrity; with an emphasis on controls over timeliness, completeness, and accuracy of data and alignment to other significant executive reports and metrics as applicable
  • Ownership of spreadsheet-based supplemental data used to enhance reporting capabilities beyond what core 'system of record' data sources provide as well as oversight of processes to ensure ongoing accuracy, completeness and traceability
  • Development of new reports and reporting capabilities, with a goal of continuous improvements to efficiency in reporting practices and effectiveness in our ability to generate risk insights through our work products


An Ideal Candidate:
  • Has demonstrable experience in managing report development and delivery, including executive stakeholder materials such as monthly business reviews and scorecards
  • Has experience as an advanced user of reporting tools such as Tableau or Google Data Studio and is fully comfortable with use of complex spreadsheet functions
  • Is focused on quality, timeliness, and accurate reporting delivery and can effectively summarize a storyline from data
  • Is both detailed-oriented and strategic, and leverages a strong reporting background including data visualization and diverse communications experience to tailor materials to stakeholder needs
  • Has direct experience with Capital One's data environments and tools, and effectively pivots between Data Analyst and Process Manager competencies
  • Is a critical thinker that enjoys solving complex problems, seeking to understand the business and its risk environment
  • Enjoys working in fast paced environment and on routine tasks
  • Is a continuous learner
  • Is familiar with financial services risk management frameworks


Basic Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent certification
  • At least 2 years of experience in Risk Management or Process Management,
  • At least 2 years of experience in Project Management or Communications
  • At least 2 years of experience in Analysis or reporting


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Strong problem solving and customer focus skills
  • 1 year of experience working with senior leaders
  • 2 years of data analysis experience including data visualization
  • 5 years of experience working in financial services
  • 3 years of experience with Governance, Risk, and Compliance analytics and software tools
  • 2 years of Agile or design thinking experience
