Collaborates with the Nursing Research Education Team to research, develop, implement, promote, deliver, and evaluate training and education programs using evidence-based approaches and frameworks that support the Health Department’s strategic plan and the Essential Public Health Services. The SDS supports the Health Department’s orientation model through collaboration with peers and subject matter experts to develop individualized orientation plans for new Public Health Nurses in a wide variety of Health Services programs. Demonstrates proven adult learning techniques and skills in providing guidance, education, and support to new staff and peers. Promotes critical thinking among nurses, and shows commitment to professional development and lifelong learning. Supports quality assessment and improvement initiatives and processes. Supervises Resource PHN IIs and grant-funded Childhood Immunization PHN IIs.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from a college or university accredited by the National League for Nursing or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education with a bachelor's degree in Nursing; Plus three years of post-licensure experience as a nurse in an equivalent health care setting whose focus was primarily prevention services and community education, including two years in a public health/community health setting; Plus at least one year experience in a public health/community health specialty area or supervisory responsibilities.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • Possession of current license or a multistate licensure privilege to practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia;
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation - CPR (Required within 60 days)
  • AED (Required within 60 days)
  • Valid Motor Vehicle Driver's License.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a Child Protective Services Registry, a driving record check, and sanction screening to the satisfaction of the employer.

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs may be subject to a weekly testing requirement. Vaccinated employees and employees with a medical or religious exemption will complete the attestation online on their first day of employment or shortly thereafter.

This position is emergency/essential services personnel. (Required to report for duty during inclement weather and/or other emergencies).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree in nursing, education or a related field.
  • Two years of experience developing, implementing and evaluating training and development programs.
  • Two years of public health or community health experience.
  • Previous experience educating and/or serving as an instructor for adult learners, as well as experience delivering oral presentations to diverse audiences in formal and informal settings.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience orienting and mentoring new staff.
  • Exceptional organization and time management skills that reflect an ability to manage multiple, time-sensitive priorities and projects with excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Job is generally sedentary in nature, and job requires walking, standing, sitting (for long periods of time), and kneeling, reaching, bending, climb stairs and carry equipment or young children up to 25 pounds in weight. Uses hands to grasp, handle or feel. Visual acuity is required to read data on a computer monitor. Ability to operate keyboard driven equipment. Ability to drive a vehicle. Position frequently communicates and must be able to exchange accurate information with others verbally and in writing. Generally, works in an office environment yet may occasionally be required to perform job duties outside of the typical office setting. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
