The Senior Manager, Editorial Services oversees the functions of the Editorial Services unit and is responsible for ensuring that the team has the staffing, training, and processes to successfully perform its tasks. The unit handles a wide range of editorial tasks including editing corporate communications, proposals, and client deliverables such as reports, manuals, web content, and journal submissions. In this role you will bring a deep understanding of the editorial function to provide high-level management to a team consisting of permanent full-time staff and a freelance editorial pool. The team may include subordinate managers or supervisors.

The Senior Manager, Editorial Services will build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external clients, seeking ways to improve utilization and client satisfaction. You will also collaborate effectively with other managers in the business development and creative services groups and contribute to the overall achievement of department and company goals.

This role is based in Rockville, Maryland and eligible for a hybrid work arrangement.

Duties: 
  • Establish and update internal procedures for handling of assignments and quality control, providing quality control checks as needed.
  • Oversee hiring, training, and performance reviews of permanent and temporary staff.
  • Provide training and coaching to staff to elevate individual and overall team performance.
  • Directly or by working through subordinate leads, coordinate with other teams (document production, graphics, proposal, marketing) on client deliverables to ensure deadlines and other expectations are met.
  • Understand and implement various style guides; create or update style guides as needed.
  • Participate in meetings with project teams and clients to assess the scope of work and level of effort required from editors.
  • Establish relationships with internal clients to better understand and anticipate their needs, and to identify opportunities to expand work or improve service.
  • Assess trends impacting editorial needs, and develop and execute plans for staffing, training, and/or technology to address changing needs.
  • As needed in cases of high profile, sensitive, or quick turn-around assignments, complete editorial tasks.
  • Work with other members of the department management team to help complete cross-team projects, and to achieve department and company goals.
  • Identifies and assesses opportunities for Editorial Services to contribute to company growth; develops and executes plans to realize these opportunities.

 
Basic Qualifications:  
  • Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, or relevant field.
  • Minimum 20 years of experience in editorial production and management, including 5 years of supervisory experience, preferably with hybrid teams
  • Demonstrated writing and editing skills and the ability to articulate concepts, messages, and strategies
  • In-depth knowledge of standard style guides (e.g., GPO, Chicago, APA)
  • Possess knowledge of basic quality control procedures for Section 508-compliant documents in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Acrobat PDF
  • MSOffice Suite experience required


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in English, journalism, communications, or relevant field
  • Experience in the research and/or government contracting fields
  • Experience editing proposals submitted in response to Requests for Proposals (RFPs)
  • Experience managing freelance or temporary staff
  • Experience using project management tools to manage assignments
