Job Summary

The Washington Post is seeking a Software Engineer for our Subscriptions Engineering team. This team of engineers focus on acquiring and retaining digital subscribers across our platforms. As a backend engineer, you will build features, services and tools for our subscribers and the subscriptions business.

You will be part of a fast paced, collaborative team that supports the full lifecycle of our subscribers and delivers high quality products. You will have an opportunity to work with colleagues from all parts of the company from Marketing to the Newsroom. This role reports to a Director of Engineering.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver enhancements across many backend services which power subscriber experiences onsite and in native mobile apps.
  • Write high-quality code with best practices and design patterns in mind
  • Engage in code review and quality assurance processes
  • Collaborate with partners in Product, Marketing, Analytics and Accounting to define sprint goals and break development work into atomic units.
  • Optimize the underlying AWS infrastructure for subscription services for performance and cost.
  • Guide technical decisions and drive technical architecture decisions
  • Participating in the on-call rotation. An on-call schedule will be determined a couple of months after you join, taking into account team size and other variables.


Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3+ years of development experience
  • An established track record of development with Java EE; familiarity with other frameworks such as Play! And Spring is valued
  • Practical experience with message/event buses such as JMS and SQS/SNS (AWS).
  • Exposure to Application servers such as Wildfly, Glassfish, Tomcat and Web servers such as httpd and Nginx
  • Knowledge of DevOps technologies like Docker, Jenkins, and AWS Products.
