Arlington County Intern

This is a one-year, full-time, paid Internship Program

Arlington County i s an exciting, innovative local government entity located in Northern Virginia. We are seeking highly motivated individuals for exciting one-year Internships in a variety of positions across the County. These positions offer a career opportunity to qualified individuals with little or no previous professional work experience to help them prepare for a career in a variety of fields of work. This Internship will provide recent college graduates and currently enrolled graduate students with an in-depth, hands-on learning opportunities in areas critical to supporting local government initiatives while participating in a developmental and training cohort with peers.

Over the course of a year, Interns work under the mentorship and supervision of senior staff members to gain valuable on-the-job training and real-world work experience. They support the County's efforts to consistently work toward greater efficiency and effectiveness by offering improved processes and fresh ideas, and by leveraging smart technologies, while becoming familiar with the public-sector work environment as a viable and fulfilling career path.

Program Participation

2 021 and 2022 college graduates with a preferred minimum GPA of 3.0 and who have no professional work experience in an area related to the internship are welcome to apply. Applications will be considered from candidates who have earned a Bachelor's or Master's degree in 2021 or 2022 prior to the start date of the Internship or applicants who are currently enrolled in a Master's degree program related to the internship.

Position Available

Department of Technology Services (DTS)

This is an exciting opportunity for a driven professional to steward the critical technology building blocks of asset management and device deployment across Arlington County. As a member of the Department of Technology Services (DTS), this role will partner with leadership to ensure the realization of outcomes related to the accounting of County IT assets and configurations.

IT Asset Management is the management of physical components (ex. desktops, laptops, tablets, phones), computer networks, and software from the procurement stage to the retirement of the asset. Assets needs to be managed correctly to ensure the organization is getting the most out of the asset and the organization remains in compliance. Processes need to be in place to manage the asset from the point of request to the moment the asset is recycled.


  • Performs daily and long-term operational and strategic management of hardware and software;
  • Applies a continuous improvement approach in enhancing the strategies employed in technology spending, as well as in tracking County assets within the Configuration Management Database (CMDB) throughout their lifecycle;
  • Ensures effective management of the CMDB, Software Asset Management (SAM), Hardware Asset Management (HAM) databases and that the content contained is accurate;
  • Provides KPI/Metric information and standardized reporting on a scheduled basis together with unscheduled reporting requested by management
  • Participates in various projects, providing support to Service Delivery, Infrastructure, and Finance;
  • Creates and gains buy-in for plans to drive targeted adoption efforts, including but not limited to: communication plans, stakeholder engagement plans, training plans, defined outcomes and success metrics; and
  • Take part in and/or coordinate with other IT Service Management processes, or as required perform as a back up to maintain operational activities.

Selection Criteria

We anticipate filling thes e positions between July 1, 202 2 and September 1, 202 2 . Therefore, applications will be accepted from candidates graduating with an undergraduate degree no later than August 202 2 and from candidates currently pursuing a Master's Degree in their field with no prior professional work experience .

  • Must have earned a Bache lor's or Master's degree in 202 1 or 202 2 prior to the sta rt date of the Internship or are currently enrolled in a Master's degree program related to the internship ; and
  • Interns may not have professional work experience related to the internship.

Degree Requirements : Computer Science, Business, or related field.

Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following.
  • G.P.A. of 3.0 or above is preferred. Applicants may be asked to provide certified official transcripts.
