About the Role:

As a member of the Card Legal Team, you'll apply your strategic and analytical skills supporting our premium card products and experiences business. You'll be a key player on the team supporting premium credit card products, digital and customer experiences, emerging platforms and products, and benefits and card features. To succeed in this Director, Assistant General Counsel role, you'll need strong legal and business analytical skills. Written and oral communication skills also are key, as is the ability to organize thoughts on legal risk and focus on what matters in driving business initiatives forward responsibly. In this role, you'll advise and support the business team developing Capital One's flagship, premium credit card products, features and customer experiences. You'll partner with the business by strategizing about new products, platforms and promotions, learning about and understanding the business intent and investigating and assessing the legal risks, and advising on customer initiatives to deliver additional value and benefits to our customers. Working with the Card Legal team, you'll also have the opportunity to learn and partner with the bright, collaborative and dynamic group of attorneys who support Card, as well as build working relationships across the Legal department.

It's a plus if you have expertise with consumer financial regulatory laws, marketing and advertising laws, privacy laws, installment lending/Buy Now Pay Later and/or risk management. This position will report to a Senior Director, Associate General Counsel in Card Legal and will have responsibility for:

  • Identifying and assessing legal risks associated with Capital One's consumer credit card business;
  • Translating the laws and legal requirements for the business teams and the business intent for the legal team and legal subject matter experts;
  • Actively engaging with colleagues to provide legal support as part of a collaborative and cross-functional team; and
  • Working with Card, Brand, the Card Business Risk Office, Corporate Communications, and Compliance stakeholders to address risks, develop creative solutions, and resolve issues.

This position will entail regular interactions with senior business partners, Legal Department subject matter experts, and other business attorneys in a fast-paced environment.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
  • Active member in good standing of at least one state bar
  • At least 5 years of experience as an attorney in a law firm, in-house legal department, or government agency

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 6+ years of experience as an attorney in a law firm, in-house legal department, or government agency, ideally involving consumer regulatory or consumer finance experience, credit card programs or financial services
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment and flexibility to adapt to changing needs
  • Ability to build collegial and effective relationships with attorneys, business managers, creative teams, analysts, project managers, and corporate compliance professionals, and work cooperatively to resolve issues smoothly and quickly
  • Ability to prioritize work and to manage multiple, simultaneous deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence others
