Job Description

The Washington Post is looking for an experienced and creative assignment editor to oversee our social teams. This management role requires an innovative editor who is excited about connecting Post journalism to new audiences on social media and messaging platforms.

The assignment editor will oversee daily operations and strategy for The Post's branded accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, Telegram, Snapchat and Instagram. They will work closely with the deputy director, social, and editors across the newsroom, including the SEO, news analytics, homepage and app teams, to thoughtfully amplify The Post's journalism in native ways. They also will collaborate with reporters and editors to create compelling platform-specific original storytelling.

The best candidates will be organized, communicative leaders with social media experience, strong news judgment and an innovative spirit. The assignment editor will be expected to push platform experimentation and empower social editors to find new ways to attract and engage with the next generation of Washington Post subscribers.

Candidates should have experience managing a news organization's social accounts during breaking news, planned live events and quiet moments when there is time to craft that perfect post. The ideal candidate will have a command of voice and tone on social media and the ability to write sharp headlines targeted at specific audiences. They should be excited about coaching others to consistently deliver clever, high-impact storytelling that takes advantage of each social platform's distinct benefits. Candidates should be well-versed in analytics tools such as Chartbeat, Google Analytics and each platform's engagement insights; the ability to understand and act upon metrics when appropriate is imperative.

If you're a well-rounded news junkie who is comfortable editing in a fast-paced environment and have some of the following qualifications, please consider applying: at least two years of management experience in a newsroom; at least six years of journalism experience; experience using social management tools such as SocialFlow; experience reading and using analytics to make decisions; experience with social networks such as YouTube or TikTok; and the ability to investigate and verify claims on social media.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom and is not eligible for remote work.
