Job Description

The Washington Post is looking for a seasoned journalist to lead its national security desk and steer some of the highest profile and most consequential coverage in the newsroom.

This editor must have the expertise and exceptional judgment required to guide a large team that covers foreign policy, intelligence services, the military, cyber warfare, homeland security, terrorism, domestic extremism, immigration, criminal justice and the federal judiciary. We are looking for an experienced editor and deft manager with a track record of executing high-elevation stories that illuminate how policy-makers shape America's engagement with the world and handle both foreign and domestic security threats. The ideal candidate has a proven ability to drive competitive scoops, run big breaking news, handle sensitive sourcing and shape ambitious lines of coverage.

We are looking for someone who brings a sophisticated vision to this portfolio and strong organizational abilities. This editor must be skilled at working collaboratively across the newsroom and enthusiastic about identifying the most engaging forms of storytelling.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom.

Interested candidates should upload a résumé with links to their work and a cover letter outlining the experience they would bring to the position to our jobs portal. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by 06/19/2022 will be prioritized. Your cover letter should be addressed to National Editor Matea Gold, Deputy National Editor Philip Rucker and Managing Editors Steven Ginsberg and Krissah Thompson.
