Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking an innovative, insightful and dynamic journalist to take on a new leadership position as audience strategy editor for technology and business coverage, with the goal of accelerating experimental thinking about essential areas of coverage.

The Business section - and especially its growing technology team - is critical to The Post's mission of expanding readership domestically and internationally. This person will help chart the trajectory of our technology and business coverage by developing strategies that place the needs of our growing audience at the center of our journalism. Tapping all audience disciplines - including tactics for reaching new readers, building loyalty and exploiting social and search - this person will guide decisions about what gets covered and how, who gets hired, and how to think about our best opportunities for both staff and audience growth.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced newsroom leader who has a demonstrated ability to produce journalism that meets the needs of various news audiences. This candidate should have a clear point of view on story form, use of voice, effective visual journalism and how to elevate strong and appealing story targets from the flood of daily news. Strong candidates will have eight or more years of newsroom experience, including in the use of audience analytics. Management experience is preferred, as is a familiarity with covering the technology industry and its cultural impacts.

This position, a new role that reports directly to the business editor, is part of a major expansion of The Post's editing ranks. It is based in our Washington newsroom and is not eligible for remote work.

Candidates should upload a résumé and cover letter to our jobs portal. All application materials can be uploaded to the same field. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by 05/31/2022 will be prioritized. Your cover letter should be addressed to Business Editor Lori Montgomery and Head of Audience Strategy and Growth Erika Allen.

The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.

Ever wondered if what you are doing will Impact Tomorrow? At The Washington Post, every employee shapes the way we deliver the news. Find the career that's right for you
