University Police OfficerThe George Mason University Department of Police and Public Safety invites applications for the position of University Police Officer. George Mason University is currently the largest and most diverse university in Virginia with students from all 50 states and over 135 countries studying in over 200 degree programs at campuses in Arlington, Fairfax and Prince William; as well as at learning locations across the Commonwealth of Virginia.Responsibilities:Specific duties include: providing vehicle, bicycle or foot patrol of the campus; responding to suspicious activities; resolving complaints; investigating criminal and traffic incidents; and providing first responder aid when required. Other skills required are interviewing and taking statements, making arrests, filling case reports, testifying in court, and assisting other law enforcement agencies. The George Mason University Police Department subscribes to a robust community-oriented policing philosophy in order to fulfill its mission.Required Qualifications:Possess a high school diploma or equivalent;Possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license;Have U.S. citizenship as set out by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS);Have reached 21 years of age by completion of academy training;Ability to perform law enforcement and security functions within the Department of Police and Public Safety;Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills;Exceptional customer service skills;Ability to exercise good judgement and decision making skills;Ability to work independently and as member of a team;Successfully complete a polygraph, and medical, and psychological assessment;Successfully pass an in-depth background investigation;Successfully complete a physical agility assessment and written POST assessment;Successfully complete a course of instruction at a police academy approved by the Virginia DCJS (unless currently certified as a Police Officer through DCJS in the Commonwealth of Virginia);Successfully complete a mandated Field Training Program administered by the department;Must live within 75 miles of the Fairfax campus;No conviction of Driving Under the Influence (DUI/DWI), Refusal to take Blood or Breath Test, Eluding Police, or Racing in the past two years;No illegal or illicit drug use within the past two years;Have no driving under the influence (DUI) convictions within the past two years;Have no illegal or illicit drug use within the past two years;Have no felony convictions or convictions of misdemeanors involving crimes of moral turpitude or gross misconduct;Must not have been found guilty by reason of mental illness for any crime;No convictions or restraining orders for domestic violence, or other disability to carrying firearms;No criminal or unethical behavior unsuitable or inappropriate for a Police Officer as determined by the appointing authority;Must not have been de-certified of law enforcement or jailor status by the Department of Criminal Justice Services, according to the Code of Virginia 15.2-1707, or similar status in other states; andMust not have any record of untruthfulness, falsification, or the intentional withholding of any information on any application, certificate, credential, interview, test, or documents/records associated with a position of trust.Preferred Qualifications:College degree;Currently certified as a Police Officer in the Commonwealth of Virginia;Previous law enforcement, military, or security experience;Previous experience at George Mason University or another college/university; andTrained/certified in Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training.Both new and current state employees will be required to serve a one-year probationary period upon completion of law enforcement certification and/or employment.
